is there a site that will tell you the key of a song on the internet? i really havent looked, but this thought has crossed my mind..

this site, could have such a data base.. for blues.. where novice players like myself could look up the key and position of a song i would like to woodshed.. i mean as a rook, im not really able to tell the key yet.. and how could i figure it out with out a pitch pipe or the right harp....

it really wouldnt be all that hard.. easier than the great job that was done on the forum archive.. everyone that knows a songs key and position could post it up, and the site programer could put it in an alphabtical list..

i found this list of sonny terry songs, that im posting up as an example.. its just a thought, and if nothing else, at least you guys and new members will be able too see sonnys songs..

Hmmm.

it is simple to figure out the key of any song once you learn how. Use your C harmonica, memorize what the notes are on the 1st 4 holes. When you hear a song, try to hear the "root" note - hum it. If you're right it will sound good against all 3 chords. Find this note on your C harp. That's the key of the song.

There are no guarantees anyway. It may be academic to know the key in which a song was originally performed - but there's no rule that says the person YOU'RE going to play with will play a tune in that same key. I change the keys of songs I perform all the time to suit my vocal range, for example. If its a B.B. King tune, I will almost certainly have to sing it a step down from where he did it. SOME songs are pretty standard - most everyone does Caldonia in G. But Louis Jordan did Choo Choo Cha Boogie in F, B.B does it in G.

B.B did Every Day I have the Blues in Bb, but T-Bone walker did it in C, and Charles Brown did in G. See what I mean?

Hey Gwood, David Barrets website Harmonica Masterclass is a fantastic free resource for this, it’s pretty comprehensive and has artist listing that details each album's title, songs, song keys, and key of harmonica used and position played.

The link is:
