My buddy has decided to bring his alto sax when we get back to college next week (and I've never played with anyone). I know an Alto is Eb because I used to play it (very badly in school band), but what key harp would I use to play with an alto?

I got a C chrom that I just got, but I would like to know what key diatonic would be groovy.

Thanks in advance,

Well that all depends on what kind of music you want to play. Blues? I would recommend second or third position, so in that case you would need an Ab or Db, respectively.

I would probably pick the Db myself and play it in 3rd.

Well, we're probably going to play anything from blues to jazz to I don't know what. And darn, both keys I don't have (yet).

If you hold the C chromatic slide in that raises it to
D-flat, which is 3rd position for E-flat minor blues.
Very cool.

Listen to William Clarke for how to play with a horn section.

Sweet. Noted that action. Still in the process of learning basic chromatic harmonica, but I'll check that out right away. Any other tips for harp playing with an alto would be awesome.

Back in black and strumming a guitar now too. I'm exactly one week into my guitar learning process and I've got the E chord, and I am working on a 2 octave minor pentatonic E scale. Finger tips hurt like a mother...

Oh yeah, I picked the harp back up too. Just needed a little break... good to be back.

Even a beginner can play in G, probably also D, so maybe a Eb, or Bb, both in cross harp.
