In germany its nothing like that. Most people don't even know the sound of it. Then when I start bending the notes, they start gasping and well... the train, everbody loves that...

And if they're not convinced, I play the stuff of Michael Hirte, he won the "germanys got talent", and thats it... never encountered any disrespect - to the contrary.

Buddha, It's cool when you get ramped up like that. Time to learn something.

As for the arppegio things, yeah I'd have to look that up.
As for the scale over the Caug - Now I might be wrong here but, Its my understanding that the augmented chord is based on the 5th being raised 1/2 step so I'd likely try the F mixolydian.

As for the relative major from Gm - I'd say the Bb

As for the relative minor over the Fmaj - I'd say the Dm.

Am I right?

Xharp you are right on the relative minors... I had the minor pentatonic scale vs major pentatonic scale in my head from a discussion I was haveing with a buddy, and got the intention of the question all wrong.

Then I typed it wrong on here on a public forumn. Egg on my face.

Thanks Preston, I knew those for sure from all the jamming I've done.
The one that I am interested in knowing if I got it right is the Caug scale being F mixolydian
I chose that because the raised 5th is Ab and that works with F mix but..... I'm still only guessing.....waiting patiently on our resident Jazz guru.

It just accured to me that maybe I rely too heavily on the Pentatonic scales, and need to broaden my horizons a bit. When asked the relative minor, I automatically thought to myself, The E minor pentatonic scale has the exact same notes as G major pentatonic scale. I never even second guessed myself if I had the question wrong.

Is it really necessary to know all this stuff? Isn't it better to have a sense of rhythm and an instinct for playing music with feeling?

I know lots of people with arts degrees who can name every bone in the body for life studies and they can't draw. They can talk the talk but can't walk the walk.

Lobs grenade and hides behind rock.

i dont think its necessary but it gives you a better understanding of what your doing thus giving you the ability to create music that sounds good/correct rather then just guessing by ear.

Preston, I couldn't remember if you had a youtube channel? Anyway, you mention you are self taught in music theory I'm curious what your references were for some of this information? Can you recommend books, websites, or was in theory courses from a college?

Tooka: I don't think it's absolutely necessary. When it comes to music if it sounds good it's right, imo.

Wouldn't your major scale AND minor scale both play over your suspended chord? But then again, here in the backwoods, folks hardly ever play suspended chords for a man to play scales on. ;)

If I didn't already know theory and basic jazz from piano I would never have progressed as Quickly as I have...

Csus- C, F, G
C7 b5- C, E, Gb, Bb
C13- C, E, G, Bb, D, F, A

Not sure about what scale would fit over a C augmented except maybe a whole tone scale?

G minor is relative to Bb, (or dorian minor is relative to F)

Relative minor to F major would be D

Ryan M,
I have a youtube account, but haven't posted a vid in a long time, and I'm rarely on there anymore. As far as teaching myself musical theory:

I got "Rock N' Blues Harmonica" from Jon Gindick about 2 years ago, not long after I picked up the harp. The book that accompanies it teaches you some very basic stuff about music theory, but in terms that are easy for a beginner with no exposure.
From there I just started searching the internet for good stuff.

There's a ton of stuff on Wikipedia, but since anybody and everybody can edit wikipedia, I like to go get a second opinion on some of the stuff I read on there.

Tookatooka:
I think you are correct, but me personally, I'm not wired that way. I have to know the "how" and "why". That's also the driving force on why I started hotrodding my own harps too.

Tooka, You're right, you don't really need this. I also prefer to try to find my own path with tunes I'm working on. It is about feel and rhythym for sure.
Its just that this is kinda neat stuff to know.

Bye the way, damn fine atrwork, sir. This is the first time I clicked on your link and I am pleasantly surprised at what I see. You watercoulours landscapes are well done. Very nice indeed.

Preston, cool, thanks for your response. I actually have that Gindick book but haven't looked at it in a while, Ill have to check it out again this weekend. Good to know that I dont need courses or even specific books on the subject! Any favorite website resource?

The youtube question had the hidden intent of how to message you off forum, haha. Easily the feature that I miss most on these forums. I still have some of your videos from harpfriends from like December last year :) .

You know what else is really annoying?
When a guitarist says we're playing in the key of "E" and then says "Your A" Like I don't know what fucking harmonica to play! I don't tell him how to play his instrument why should he tell me which harmonica to use??? That is just some condescending bullshit right there.

You wait till the drummer tells you what key to play in and what harp to use. Then you really got something to complain at.

That bothers me sometimes, too, asilve3... What if I don't wanna play cross harp? What if I want to play a chromatic? Just tell me the key.

The bagpipes.... I watched the comedy channel the other day and there was a good bagpipe commedian. He even did some Led Zepplin and Stones stuff... Except for the squealling noise he was bloody funny.

Its funny you say that because I (no lie!) was at a jam last night and someone brought their bagpipes. They played them at the end of the night and another harmonica player got up there and jammed with him! It was a pretty funny scene.

I was jamming at a friend's house when this cocky guitarist came over, picked up one of my harps and started huffing and puffing to no good effect. He asked how come he wasn't getting the same kind of sound as me and so i had some options.I could point out he had the wrong key and give him some helpful hints and tips.I could poke him in the eye and tell him not to be so rude as to slobber over my stuff without asking.Or i could adapt a story i heard Phil Wiggins tell about Sonny Boy ( don't ask which one, i think he knew four of 'em!). So i kindly explained that this particular harp had not dried out from the overnight soaking i gave it in my own urine. A good thing the window was closed because he spat that thing out so fast; and i'm hoping he will never molest a harmonica again.
