Hi!
Can anybody do stable tongue-blocked overblows?
I know Jay Gaunt mentioned that he can in the interview with Jason Ricci - but I am not sure that what he played was tongue-blocked or lip-pursed.

Also are there examples use of of tongue-blocked blow bends (except Mitch Kashmar who's an expert in this)?

Hi stikhon,

I might not be much help to you here cos I can barely do OBs, just the odd 6OB on a good harp.

But, what I would say is this: the longer I play, the more I find that those subtle sorts of things with the tongue, throat and diaphram just start to come.

I'm not really a tongue blocker, but late last year, I tried - just for the hell of it - to do a few draw bends tongue blocked. And I could.

Today, I was playing idly while watching TV, and I tried to do a bit of that SBWII cigar trick. It wasn't quite SB, but I managed something OKish.

I've not really answered your question and I'm rambling.

Anyway, welcome to the forum.

Hi Stikhon,

I play all TB, and my 2 cents on this. Doing OBs with TB is just the same as doing blow bends with TB. It requires the tongue to be arched while blocking the holes. Yes, you can get stable OBs, its like another bends, if anything, its easier than getting the 10 hole blow half note bend. And really, its not as difficult as it sounds.

The only person I can think of who is doing it might be Dennis Gruenling 'cause he plays 100% TB too.

James Conway is doing that too, I've heard James at SPAH and he's convince me to work on the tongue blocking and double tongue blocking. James has not only stable OB but a super nice sound too (using a Special 20)

the bad news is another 3 years at least ahead of me before I can master this. After 4 days of work I can bend the 1st (TB on the right) and the bends on holes 3 (sloppy) and 4 (stable) all that with the TB on the left.

Another technique implying the tongue blocking is the double bending that Joe is using....

The road has no end my friends

Double tongue blocking (James own words) is the possibility of TB on the left or on the right, allowing to play fast a big gap between 2 notes (i.e hole 2 to hole 6)in addition it allows the addition of a rhythm in the middle and the effect is simply beautiful

Question answered?

Thank you guys a million for the answers!
Christelle - isn't this double tongue blocking what Adam showed in his first Whammer Jammer lesson - the very first warble (tongue is quickly moved side-to-side) - or is it something else?
