well, after last night's practice, i decided to do some harp surgery on m y new marine band in A. The playability of it in a live scenario really brought it's problems to light. Specifically, the difference in pressures needed between holes 3 and 4. As I Played some of my ascending and descending licks there, I really found the differences aggrevating in a live scenario. I felt like I was just huffing and puffing to get the notes all played in correct timing. When we did You gotta move in the aerosmith style, i could really tell i was needing too much air to simply chug down there. When I got home, i compared it to my special 20 in A. Sure enough, huge air requirement compared to the 20. Also, I analyzed the differences between holes 3 and 4.

Yep, I bit the bullet, pulled the covers and re-gapped all four reeds with a short stop on hole 2 to tweak it a touch. I also tightend up hole 1 blow and draw.

The difference is amazing. The nails went right back in...looks like I was never there. Don't know why i didn't do it before....lol.

Happy camper again.

Let me add, I have often had a love/hate relationship with different instruments. They are all different and I am probably just not a good enough musician to switch between all of them without this just being normal for me. I am so new at harp, I am trying really hard to get consistency between my instruments and I can see they will always be a touch different. I like the challenge..even of taking my new one apart and fixing it to fit me. It's okay.

What instruments? Many guitars, from strats, to les pauls, to 335 styles, acoustics too, trumpet, mandolins (one commercial a style one f-style hand made), jazz bass, hand percussion from djembes to conga, to bongo, to darbuka, to shakers, rainsticks, chimes, concert bells, tambourine (not as easy as this looks, this one)maracas, clave (way important this one)and of course vocals.

To me, when these harps work differently, it's like trying to sing when i am sick and trying to keep my voice from cracking. It's just a struggle I don't want. So far, no big deal..lovin' the harp.
