I'm having back surgery tomorrow morning and plan on recooperating by working on electric harp with my old brown bullet, a delay/reverb unit ,a pignose amp and whiskey flask hidden under my mattress.
I've always played acoustic in an old time two man thing but just got a chance to play "up river" blues and this is a good chance for me to take the big dive.
I've been fortunate enough to learn by fire, playing in bars and parties for a few years now and really look forward to this challenge

Just had a hip replaced this year in February and planned the same thing (sort of). Don't be disappointed if the first week or so you just don't feel up to that much movement due to the pain from the surgery... After that give it all ya got.

I had shoulder surgery three weeks ago today. I really felt pretty lousy for the first few days as the anesthesia wore off and the pain came and went. I actually did a 45 minute stand-up set two weeks later (this past friday night, about an hour away). I have to say I am surprised at how wiped out I was after it. I also play congas/bongo and trumpet and sing background and lead vocals...tambourine/shakers/etc.

Be careful and stay ahead of the pain with the meds they give you. I probably pushed the envelope a little.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Just got hom from a 4 hour procedure on a badly ruptured lumbar disk...long day but happy to know I'll be 52 and pain free.
Thank you all for your kind support.

congaron makes a good point about staying ahead of the pain with the meds and staying on a sane pace for what you expect for movement after the surgery. Take it moderate and let pain be your guide with movement. Moderate pain for at least a week with the meds. Staying on top of the pain actually promotes healing.

eharp - splinters don't count. But I did find it humorous. I've actually had trouble with my heartburn this week and that doesn't count either. Heartburn pain meds = Rolaids.

you may want to be careful about painkillers and whiskey.

is your mic the same impedance as your pignose? a high-z mic and a low-z amp will squeal out at relatively low volumes. which may be ok for practice but out live it turns ugly fast in my experience. i did once manage to use a pig 7-100 and a green bullet with a cm for a few sets. the rhythm guitarist's amp crapped out so we put him in my princeton and i opted for the pignose. couldn't turn up very much but we mic'd it to the p.a. and it worked fair.

hope you get some good r&r, keep your favorite blues music close to hand. maybe let your muse just listen for a time. the subconscious is always working even when you take a break for a while, and when you revisit playing live you may find some new inspiration.

Leanground...Just checking on your progress. The second and third days were pretty rough for me as the anesthesia wore off and the locals did too. I had Hydrocor for pain..really made me loopy! Just wondered how you're coming along.

I'm recovering well, thanks
My right leg is no longer in constant pain
you tube lumbar laminectomy to see my procedure...cool
I've been invited to join a band outside my blues box so I'm dreaming/ visualising the tunes and will work them out bit by bit
i have to do it all by ear and improvise on the spot...I admire the rest of you who can read and play tabs and all. I just jump and run with it and let myself love it
