I think we should start a thread showing unusual or bargain harps we find on eaby or elsewhere on the web.

I'd like to start it off by offering you this superb item I've just spied on ebay. I'd place a bid soon cause this is going to go quick. Being Irish it caught my eye right away.

Not for £65 you won't (that's about $90). This is worth about $10, max. These were mass produced in the 60s and 70s by Hohner in an assembly plant they had in Galway in Ireland where they also made the American Ace and the Lancer. I think this guy is being very optimistic about the the price.

i think thats a horrible idea. cause i dont want people bidding on the stuff i want to get. it lessens the chance that ill get it an it raises the price if i do.

I don't think you guys are with me here...I'm being Ironic in saying this is superb...it's a piece of crap that he's trying to sell for £65 (about $90).

What I'd like to do is show harps that people think are worth a fortune and trying to sell on ebay but are actually rubbish.

if that pro harp is vintage, what's mine? it isn't 'MS'. It is very old battered and dented.

any clue on this one. It is a marine band. The cover plates are held on by one bolt & nut like special 20's. the end of the cover plates are rounded not rectangular?

It might be a Marine band MS that was produced for a short while in the 80s. These were basically a Big Rive harp with the top cover plate stamped with the marine Band logo and the letters MS. There was apparently a huge outcry about this and Hohner very quickly reverted to the original design. I have a couple of these and they are exactly the same as a big river...one nut at the end of each cover plate.

Hey Lumpy...before the MS series all of the harps in that series were built like the MB, in that they were individual harps, not part of a series. You had the Pro harp, and the Blues harp which also used to be held together by nails.
I have a Db "old" proharp and it is probably one of my nicest palying harps. I think Hohner tried to save money when it created the MS series as the the reedplates fitted every type of harp.

Lee Oskar (Tombo) one-upped Hohner with their replaceable reedplate systems. The MS systen Harps were the result. What seemed like giving consumers what they were asking for actually dropped the quality. Hohner Harps in the late 70's and 80's were harrible. Again, my opinion don't everyone get in a frenzy

I've got a harp that I'm not exactly sure of. It is larger with Marine Band Cover plates, Screws for the cover plates looks like the 364/365 12 hole Same red box with blue stripes but all the 364/365 boxes I've seen have either 364 or 365 on the box this has nothing. no other paperwork and inside stamp just says made in Germany no LY New York or anything. I feel like it has to be an older 364 but I can find nothing online to verify.

Oisin... Yup I knew that, what I meant was if they were calling an MS ProHarp 'vintage' mine must be an 'archealogical' find. I doesn't play at all well, I think it is really only worth scrapping, but it was my first I think so I keep it for sentimental reasons [daft isn't it]

I'm with Olsin here. I wouldn't, even in dreamland, bid 65 quid, which I think converts to three bazillion dollars now...
The Galway plant was Hohner's 1970s China. It's where they made their 1970s equivalent of the Bluesband... unfortunately, that's pretty much what this is.

By all means, don't feel bad for posting it. I learned the Irish plant was in Galway... any day you learn something is good day.

hah the story is the best

"This is a M. Hohner Marineband Harmonica. It has wonderful sound and have been laying in it's ripped up box for over fifty years inmyfamily alone. We got it from a man named Dr. Charles Story. His family was rich and they traveled all over to bring nice things home. This is extremely rare. "

Hey Jon..I think Dr Charles Story must have travelled to germany in 1871 looking for nice things to bring home and bought this ...one of the first harps ever made and then brought it home and gave it to this guys grandfather. He was the guy the good doctor gave all his nice things to ...once he'd brought them home.
He must be related to the guy who invented that civil war plastic in that GLH harp Dave mentions above.

It's not a joke, just very sad. I tried to send the lister a note explaining how to date harmonicas and what she really has but the answer I got was very defensive. Evidently the good Dr Story was a hero to this woman and she insists that I must be somehow wrong because anything to do with him is Gospel Truth not to be challenged. This harmonica is from the late 1800's and worth more then anything similar despite any other logic. It won't sell, she may relist it at a lower price but I think she'll wind up keeping it as a momento. Hope she's not in any desperate need.

The Dr. Story story has been Wiki-rased! I smell a conspiracy.

I do have an idea about how to sell things on ebay though. You guys just wait until I sell my Marine Band owned by Mozart. It'll be on Wikipedia and Ebay soon! I imagine 10K a good starting bid?

Nah, it would be a Super Vamper - Marine Bands weren't available in Austria until 1970 something...
