My policy is generally to stay away from discussions about amps and mics and all that crap--I have enough trouble just playing harp and guitar.
However, at a gig last week I found that it was very difficult to get my harp jammed up close enough to the vocal mic to get it amped enough--it ruined one of my best harp breaks in a blues tune that I was doing.
So, I went off to find the solution--a way to mic the harp on a stick seperate from the vocal mic--apparently. the only thing on the market is this one:

$180! Crap! Does anybody know how to maybe make one of these contraptions for cheap?
I know Jon Gindick mics his with some funnel looking jobby--I'll have to go write to him to see where you get one of those. . .

A strnad (yup that's spelt correctly!) would work, but they seem to be hard to find now.

Right now the Elderly site seems to be down so I can't see what bdr means, but Oldwailer, do you mean "playing in a rack"?
As for volume through a vocal mic, that is one of the reasons I developed my external and internal volume controls. When I play acoustic I use the same mic I sing through. I adjust the volume right there at the mic.
If you were NOT talking about playing in a rack, cupping the vocal mic while playing harp is usually louder (and often painful to the audience) than the vocals and you may want to turn the mic down. However when I sing I like to "eat" the mic for maximum proximity effect, and when I play I use a full hand cup in front of the mic for max "wah" effect - so I actually have to turn the mic up for the harp solos. Either way, a VC at the mic is a big elp. Check out http://www.BlowsMeAway.com for more info.....

@bdr--I just can't imagine that thing working with an SM57 or 58 hanging out the end and hooked up on a rack, but thanks for the input--
@Greg--yes, I was referring to playing on a rack--and my hands are busy with the guitar, so volume adjusting isn't really a realistic solution.
I wrote to Jon Gindick, and he said he can provide a Strnad hoder & rack--I might just go that way--it's a lot cheaper and it seems to work. . .

Bump. I've got a 10-hole Strnad, still in the box, from many years ago-I don't use it. I'll gladly sell it to make room for more gear. Email me if there's still an interest. ---------- GO SAINTS! crescentcityharmonicaclub@gmail.com

How much do you want for it. I might be interested in that as well. (By the way I qualify for the Who Dat discount. I'm from Baton Rouge and grew up pulling for the Saints. I used to wear my Archie Manning jersey to school even when they were 0-8!)

ScottB, now that's ol' brown-bag over the head FAITH right there! WHO DAT! 25 bucks plus shipping sound fair? If you still live in BR, you could come to one of our club meetings-we have one tonight, as a matter of fact, and I'll just bring it with me. ---------- GO SAINTS! crescentcityharmonicaclub@gmail.com

I guess if no one else is interested, I'll take it off your hands. Email me at picguards@hotmail.com and we'll close the deal.
