I joined a music theory club today proudly knowing zilch (or what I thought was zilch i knew a bit about the circle of fiths to find keys of harps)
I have to say so far so good. Its quite humbling having 12 year olds know tonnes more then you on the subject but hey we all know nothing about something at some point.
its aimed towards grade 5 theory for music exams but I think I may take it further (as I wont acutally take the exam) and i'll see how it goes.
so far we've been working on the circle of fiths and using it to create key signatures. Oh that and learning to read acutal music. o_0
Hats off to all the theorists its scary stuff but I have a lifetime left to learn so wish me luck and I encourage anyone else to do the same sort of thing. Hopefully knowing abit about why certain notes sound good where in the 12 bars will help with improvising, if not oh well ^_^

Good luck, have fun. Music theory certainly demystifies alot of things. Check out musictheory.net, great training games there.

years ago, I took a community college course in theory. It was cheap and helped me really get started on the more advanced stuff that I learned from books like The Jazz Theory Book by Mark Levine ----------

I take it you're British, Max-T?
I did grade 5 theory in 1975 so that I could sit grade 7 or 8 piano, then stopped, as I had no interest in theory. I think grade 5 is not a good place to stop, so good on you for wanting to continue!
