The Rules were posted here on the 3rd October. They looked like this.

Blow Your Brains Out! Rules.

Trying to satisfy the requirements of such a diverse forum membership will be an impossible task. Therefore here is the ‘First Draft’ of the rules which is subject to change, depending on feedback.

Please Note. If you disagree with a rule. Tell us what you think it should be, how it could be administered and how you can help with the running of HPC3 to make that rule realisable.

Rules. ‘Blow Your Brains Out’. HPC3 Solo Harp Jam Challenge.

1. It’s a Solo Harp Jam Challenge.

Amplification , Effects, Kick drums, Percussive rhythm tracks, Whooping, Stomping and Foot Tapping - Yes.

Any other backing track, musical instrument accompaniment, singing, loops - No.

2. Duration must not exceed 3 minutes.

3. Entries to be submitted to the ‘HPC3 Solo Harp Jam Challenge’ playlist on the Harpfriends Channel on YouTube by 31st January 2010.

Ensure the words ‘HPC3 Solo Harp Jam Challenge’ and your handle are included in the Title and Description fields of your YouTube entry.

The description field should also contain information about the length of time you have been playing and your perception of your skill level based on Adams guidelines which you can find here: Assess your skill level.

You may also want to include whether or not you invite comments, the type and key of harp, effects pedal used, title of piece etc. This would be useful information for others.

4. There is only one Challenge. Some people wanted to have separate challenges for the different skill levels. But this would be an administrative nightmare. If you want to do that, then administer and co-ordinate HPC4 if you have the time and can think of an efficient, easy way to do it. Anyway, who is to say that a relative beginner may not produce a more enthusiastic, soulful and touching piece than someone who may be technically perfect but plays without feeling?

5. After the deadline each participant will be encouraged to vote for the five entries they like the most.

Your individual judgement on technique, creativity, entertainment value and musical taste and whether you would want to watch it again is what counts.

Please be mindful of the participants skill level before making any comments if they are invited. We wouldn’t want enthusiastic beginners discouraged by thoughtlessness.

Constructive criticism and tips would be welcomed by those who do invite comments and don’t forget we are doing this for fun. It’s better to say nothing than be rude.

6. The overall judging system has yet to be decided but it would make sense for the participants to determine who should be in the top five and for those to go through to be judged by either the participants again but using just one vote, or, if we are lucky, a higher authority. There is to be one overall Challenge Champion or a tie if circumstances demand. The final judging will be considered and announced nearer the time.

tooka,

May I suggest that if you have the time it might be a good idea to re-do that image so that it makes it clearer that it's a challenge / contest / what have you.

It just struck me that a lot of the newer board members, of which there are many, might not know what HPC is. Just a thought.

Hmmm! Not certain what you mean. Challenge is mentioned a number of times - are you referring to my signature? If so, a click will take them to the main image which mentions challenge. Not sure what you mean.

Yeah, I meant the image in your signature. A lot of people can't be arsed to click on something unless they know exactly what it is; well, cynical old gits like me, anyway.

That HPC3 poster that appears at the end of each of your posts was put there after a lot of the newer members came along. They won't know or perhaps won't care what HPC3 is. The Internet age vies for so much of our attention that we begin to become immune to it and ignore a lot of stuff. Still, I could be wrong. Just a passing thought I had.

@Aussie, not so fast Aussie. No there will be one created nearer the time but if you want to (assuming you want to get in early) just upload your entry to the harpfriends YouTube Channel. As your entry should be clearly marked HPC-3, I can then collate and embed them into a HPC-3 thread later.

@mickil. Point taken, It's due for an update anyway.

We could have a contest to see who could write the best rules!!!

There are different ways people motivate themselves. Even one person will motivate themselves differently for different things. I play harp to create music. That's what motivates me on harp. The point is it does motivate me. Competition can be good, but not everyone responds to it.

Just from a pedagogical point of view I don't think you want to throw out the baby with the bathwater either way. If you take a classroom of 10 kids and five of them love to compete and five of them don't and hold a contest five of them will try real hard and five will be put off. If you have a collaborative session maybe those other five kids will have fun and the five competitive kids will get frustrated. The trick is to come up with a solution that gets everyone involved and maybe encourages the two groups to appreciate the qualities of other ways at looking at the problem.

Of course, either method can be taken too far. One school in NY State realized that the kids with the highest average got the most state scholarships, so they gave all their kids 100's, but I've also watched a gym teacher make a blind girl swing at a golf ball in front of the whole class in the name of competition.

This debate has already been had at enormous length months ago, and I lost my side of the argument. However, at least in this instance, the matter has been settled by those who were involved at the time. That is why the name was changed from the one used for the first two HPCs; that is the outcome of the debate.

I'm not trying to be so arrogant as to suggest that your opinion isn't a valid one; I'm just saying that on this occasion, the barn door has already been bolted, as it were.

As for the rules, tooka, who took up the baton this time, posted them a few weeks ago; they're about 8 posts above this one.

@jbone@ There's no league. We are of all differing abilities. Even the best can have a bad day and be beaten by the worst who has a good day and a stroke of luck.

IT'S ONLY FOR FUN!!!!

Good to have you on board Miles. The HPC3 playlist on YouTube is now available for uploads if you want to get in early. If you do upload and come up with something you feel is better nearer the time you can always add that to the playlist and delete the first one.

Hi Mickil, there were about 15 who signed up straight away and then a few (sixish) who have jumped on board since the original announcement. I expect some will drop out and others will jump on board as it gets nearer and the excitement grows. Still got to work out what I'm going to play yet.
