Hi folks,

I've finally settled in and consider myself comfortable in Toronto now! I'm excited to see Carlos Del Junco on October 3'rd.

Anyone else from Toronto here? I'd love to meet some MBH'ers.

Hey Oda, I'll be in TO for week and half from Oct 4 thru Oct 13... I'll be there doing some work at UofT, but it would be cool to hang out one evening if you are going to be around... I'm staying with friends downtown, and I'll likely be out getting pissed up most nights! Best bet will be the weekend of the 10th..

Cheers,

Isaac

Yup, From Hamilton. Waterdown to be exact, Mr. so&so is from KW so he's close too.

Isaacullah, the weekend of the 10th is our Thanksgiving weekend, might be a lot of family stuff going on for some of us but stay in touch as you get closer and we'll see if we can find a way to get together and jam few tunes.

Maple Blues doesn't list a whole of live stuff for Oct 10th weekend but there is lot's going on on the 3rd and through that week including Carlos at the Silver Dollar at 8pm that Oda mentioned.

We've tried to get the Canadian contingent together before. perhaps this is time to try again? Anyone interested?

Yup, I'm within striking distance. Would be good if we could swing a meet-up somehow. One of my fav Toronto blues guys is Julian Fauth (http://www.julianfauth.com/). His gig list says he's playing somewhere in TO almost every night between Oct. 3 and 13. Perhaps we could pick one of those shows to meet up at. Just a suggestion, and not even absolutely sure I can attend at the moment, but there is a good possibility.

I'm in Peterborough. Unfortunately, i am moving into a new house and starting a new job all in the same week so it looks like it's going to be another time for me. Anyways, Carlos Del Junco should be a blast.

Jawbone, Limo's a cool idea, just swing by my place and I'll jump in on that.

Wasn't by any means suggesting that the 10 or the 11th is the day as I am tied up all weekend. Grandsons B-day, Thanksgiving etc. but one night in that week, 4th to the 9th I'd make the high speed run to TO for an 'MBH North' meet and greet thing.
Hey all we got to do the next day is work so why not???

Yeah, I'm staying thru the 13 so's I can get some Canadian turkey in! Who can say no to getting TWO thanksgivings in one year?

I used to go to Healy's when I live in TO. I never did go to the Silver Dollar Room. I wasn't so into Blues back then as I am now though... I'm not constrained to the weekend either, but I can't go TOO wild during the week (since this is a working vacation for me). I'm also trying to coordinate evening outings with some old friends.... So far Monday and Tuesday nights are booked, but I can likely work in a harp meet up towards the end of the week (thursday? friday?). Does that sound doable? We can meet at a Julian Fauth show like Mr_so&so says... I haven't heard of him, but that would be a cool thing to do...

Julian Fauth is a heck of a piano player with a very unique voice. Should be a good show.

Gerome Godboo and Robin Banks will be at the Sky Restaurant in Mississauga on Oct. 11. That should be a good show as well.

Hey Guys,

I'm down with meeting up anywhere in TO. If anyone wants to put on the organizer hat? Maybe we can meet up at The Silver Dollar Room on Oct. 3'rd for the Del Junco show?

Carlos would be a good venue but the idea was sparked in having Isaacullah join us and he's not in until the 4th.
What say we find place to just meet and greet then jam some tunes in the street and call it a night? I could likely get out and do the Weds or Thurs.
Whatdya say we grab our harps and lets go here?
http://www.highway61.ca/
Say at 7:00, eat a bit, drink a few, tell some lies and jam. Wednesday we could just sit and catch Micheal Pickett, he's always a good show or Thurs the stage is usually empty we might be able to slide up there unnoticed and jam a tune or two. Of course we could get thrown out too but hey... then the jam goes to the street. I can see if I can get a guitar player to join us?
Yeah or nay?

I have a couple more thoughts on this. It would be great to include Isaac. We need to have him commit to a particular evening in order to plan. If we want to be able to chat much or jam, we should not all be riveted to watching, or being drowned out by a performer. Or, we should show up a couple of hours early to meet, greet, and eat. XHarp's suggestion sounds good to me, or we could show up a couple of hours before one of Julian Fauth's shows, or somewhere else, with or without a show going on. Sorry that this is not taking the lead on organizing this.

I like the idea of having a bit of time to chat and jam in the street or otherwise (can we say multi-harp-jam busking opportunity?) It'd be cool to get a show in, but that can be decided at the last minute... I'd like to keep it to place in the downtown area as I'm staying basically at College and Bathurst, and I'll need to walk/take the TTC. I can remember a few places around there I liked to go. Music-oriented places would be Sneaky Dee's, The Horseshoe Tavern, and Healy's (also the Silver Dollar Room although I never went there). More hang-out would be places like The Black Bull down on Queen street or Cafe Diplomatico on College (both of which have patios), or many other places I'm forgetting. We could really meet anywhere in the city since most places are just a TTC ride away...

I think Thursday would be the best night for me, but as of now, I could also do Wednesday (but it couldn't be a late night for me as I have to do some work on Thursday morning). I'm down for whatever get's decided by the "natives"! :)

Cheers,

Isaac

OK, got the idea,
Here's one right at College and Bathurst. Seems to me that I been here before in the 70's.....

http://www.dine.to/sneakydees

And here's one on college just west of Bathurst

http://www.dine.to/southsidelouies

And here's one on College further west then southside louie's

www.collegestreetbar.com/home.html

And here's another one even further west just past Ossington. Kind of farther then the others but hey it looks good too.

http://alltorontopubs.com/listing22.html

Hey take your pick but these are within the College and Bathurst area known as Little Italy. Kind of a upscale club/pub area.

If you're googling bars in little italy watch the hours some don't open until 9pm and run until 3 or 4 am. Kind of outside what we're trying to do here.

The college stret bar has dj's playing on Weds and Thursday (no cover weds, a cover on thurs), not sure if that's our style. I love Sneaky Dees. You can always get into the bar downstairs for free, even if there is a band playing upstairs. I used to go to the brass taps over on sherbourne (not the one on college), but it was pretty cool.

I just remembered that there's a REALLY cool place called the Cameron House down on corner of Cameron and Queen west (one small block west of Spadina). My friend's band used to play there, and my other friend used to spin alt rock records there too. It's always full of musician types. The music ranged from country thru blues and jazz. My vote is for meeting there Weds or Thursday around 7 or 8.

Here's the Cameron house website

And here's a review of the place

They don't have October band listings up yet, but the band plays in the back anyway, and I don't think there's a cover on weeknights...

That looks like a good spot. Let me check that Momma XHarp hasn't got something planned for me and I'll confirm early next week.

Anyone else?

Also, Isaacullah, Were you originally from Toronto? and did you ever study engineering or work with the clean fuels challenge at UofT?

I wish I could be there. Please, please one of you have the presence of mind to take a video camera. I can see there being some good YouTube material coming out of this harp meet-up.

mrs_so&so has been appraised of the situation and at this time it looks possible. I may have her in tow as well if we make a day out of the trip to TO.
I'll confirm next week as well. I don't have a preference between Wed. or Thursday at this moment. I don't have a video camera, but will bring my still camera. This should be fun.

Yeah, thursday should work just fine for me... I hope we can get this together, it would be very cool to have an IRL meetup...

Xharp: No, I just lived in TO while I was a student at U of T. I got my master's there in archaeology, so I wasn't involved with the clean fuels thing (although it sounds interesting, and I read about it in the U of T alumni magazine).... I'm an American, originally from the San Francisco Bay area, though now living in Phoenix while I work on my PhD at ASU.
