With the 5 draw of many Marine Band Deluxe harps I'm finding that they choke really easily (as in jam up and not sound) unless I Tongue Block and even then ensure that I don't attack the note too much... and then after a while they (well, 2 Ds and a C so far) break.

I can't recall another harp having this problem - sure the 4 blow would go flat after a (long) while, but never the 5 draw.

But I love the MB deluxe sound, though, the punch and the tonal variation of the MB, plus the air tightness for hitting those 3 draw bends precisely.

For the record I'm an intermediate player, with decent tone and acoustic volume - so I find most of my commonly-played harps will last a year, maybe closer to two. Anyone else having these same problems after a matter of a few months?

GamblersHand,

I've got a couple of MB Dlxs, G and A, and I can't say I've had that problem. I'm probably around where you are, skill wise.

Still, your post got me thinking. Since I came back to harp, about a year ago, I've never had a reed blow on me, except for recently with a couple of Seydels.

My A Soloist's 4 blow flatted a full semitone after about a month, and my A Soloist Pro's 5 blow has started to drift down after only a couple of weeks.

My point is I'm starting to think that there's a certain degree of luck in this, be it Hohner, Seydel, whoever. After all, these are hand made things. I can't believe that all of Seydel's or Hohner's brass reeds are that dodgy.

I might be talking a load of old tosh, in which case, hopefully someone, maybe Dave, will put me straight and clarify your question.

Sounds like the gap on the reed is too tight. As it is a draw reed just remove the covers and check visually and adjust if required.
I have worked on a few of these harps and have found no particular problem with reeds choking, maybe you've just been unlucky. Good luck.

Two MBD's, no problems.
