Hi Jonsparrow, watching this thread cos I want to learn too. I'm using the seventh string online tuner though. Hope you get some replies soon.

The table you posted tells you how many cents up or down the reed should be tuned to. I think.

Eg Hole 1 Blow tuned to exact C. Hole 1 Draw tuned to D +4 cents. Assuming it's a C harp.

I have played with tuning using only a free software downlaod tuner. Here is some GENERAL ideas.

1) If you don't know exactly what you are trying to tune to, go for regular tuning. When in doubt, don't go fancy. There is a place for equal temperment, just tuning, and the bunch of other tuning schemes that are out there. It's kind of like this quote "the nice thing about standards is that there are so many of them"

2) grab a harp that you like the sound of, that you think is in tune. Check it's tuning against your tuner. I was surprised to find that almost every note on a new harp is sharp. I also found out that the harder I draw, the more the note flattens. Therefore, you may want to sharpen your draw notes depending on how hard you draw.

3) Blues players that play second position cross may perfer different tunings to those that play a lot of straight harp 1st position. Notice I said MAY. Example, as I look at the suggested Marine Band tuning tuning that was posted above, notice that the 3rd of the blow chord is flattened in each octave. That may produce a nice blow chord, but what about a played melody when the primary chord is not the blow chord? (cross harp) You have now flattened the 6th note of the tonic chord, but then you can say, who cares about the 6th note of a scale??

4) I ussually only find a few notes off. I get them close, and I'm happy again.

Here's a link to what Pat Missin says about tuning. I trust his comments over mine.

Hi Johnsparrow, thanks for posting that tuning chart, it is very useful information. If you find any more from other manufacturers please post them.

As for tuners, I downloaded (free) the Seventh String
online tuner and found it very easy to use.

Thanks Sorin.
I've been experimenting with different tunings lately
and have just set up some MB's and old (pre ms) Pro harps
ET with the blow plate to 442HZ and the draw plates to
445HZ.
Some of these have been given to another player who has always used MB's for the last 40 yrs. in the origional tuning and we are going to compare notes.
