Hi there people,

Once again I have taken parts of my autobiography, rewritten it in the third person, and turned it into a vitriolic attack on my peers. That is to say, my latest post is up on HarpSurgery.com.

Check it out. If you have anything to sound off about, give me a holler.

Cheers,

Murray- I mean, er, Elwood.

"1. Wishing someone would “bring back” eight-track tapes."

no i dont think iv ever even seen one in real life.

"2. Singing about havin’ dem bad ole impoverished cotton-pickin’ blues… normally in the basement of their very comfortable suburban homes."

my house is a piece of shit. i live in an attic.

"3. Dreaming of a parallel universe in which Little Walter lives to be 100 and becomes President of the United States of America. Every week instead of giving fireside chats on the radio like Roosevelt, he broadcasts a profane half hour of tips and tricks for the harmonica-playing nation. It would be like Adam Gussow’s YouTube channel but, you know, more presidential. Probably a little more hooched-up, too."

thats just weird.

"4. Shaking their head in bewilderment at hip hop culture. (“Dang it sonny, if fifties music was good enough for the fifties, why the heck can’t it be good enough for you?!”) To show their disapproval of youths whose pants dangle around their ankles, many middle-aged harp players will compensate by hiking their pants right beneath the armpits. Hey, if it was good enough for the fifties…"

every one has there taste.

"In addition to this – but perhaps not important enough to merit a place on the list – harmonica players will also spend a few minutes each week practising scales and the four-hole bend. If they can find time, that is."

i spend hours a week doing scales. an i can hit a 4hole bend with no problem.

your list is flawed. are you sure its not just a list for you?

I think Elwood's goal with this post was to be hurmorous.

Of course nothing applies to everybody (except that we all need food, water, shelter) if even the majority.

Seems like it would apply more to players in their 50s or older to me. But yeah I can laugh at most of it, it's taking shots at stereotypes.

@jonsparrow
I guess every rule has an exception. However, I may have to run more tests at the lab to figure this out. Stay tuned.

@scstrickland and Ryan
Thanks, gents.

Jon: Not a worry. I hope if you view my comments in a comic light, the list's minor shortcomings and inaccuracies can be overlooked.

I've heard your scales on YouTube and believe me, I wouldn't want to meet them in a darkened alley. The manic obsession and sheer ferocity in your attitude means that, yes, perhaps you don't quite fit into the box I've tried to build. Dang.

The stereotypes underlying my "Figuring Out The Harp Player" series is based partly on the bad habits I've observed in myself and some of my contemporaries as we embarked on the long and tiring journey to graduate from apprenticeship. Most of these are bad habits we worked to abandon. More than anything, these posts poke fun at those who refused to drop their bad habits because of laziness, stubborness, or lack of imagination.

There's no honour, nor is there any fun, at mocking those who are inexperienced and eager to learn. Low-hanging fruit. It's those of us who should know better, who have had the chance to learn and have declined, who are deserving targets for laughter.

So you have my word that every time I catch myself lapsing into a lazy routine (e.g. spending more time on this forum than out in the woodshed) or falling foul of the quirkier traits of our brethren (ugly hat wearing; one-handed driving), I'll be writing about it -- and i'll take no prisoners.
