Just wondering. I have a Yamaha PSS-790 keyboard lying around which is ripe for hacking. It has loads of voices etc etc and I was wondering if anyone has ever hacked into one of these to re-configure it to make a useful effects system. There must be a way to add an input and use the amp and some of the voices to get some unusual sounds? Anyone?

This kind of thing is called circuit bending, and is how I got into electronics. Search google for "circuit bending" in general, and then "circuit bent Yamaha". Chances are one of these circuit benders has hacked that keyboard, or one like it. If you are lucky you might find a forum thread about it, or even better a tutorial...

Thanks isaacullah, that's just what I wanted, I'll see what I can find.

Enjoyed the Toronto meet-up video by the way.

If you're curious about learning about electronics and microprocessors one place that I recommend checking out is the Parallax Propeller forums. Parallax has some good educational materials available, and people have managed to put together some interesting audio projects. Various audio players, vocal tract simulations, sorta drum machines, simple audio effects, MIDI interfaces, etcetera.

One guy even made a
guitar pedal that he sells - I'm not sure how practical it is, but you can learn from the code and schematics.

Anyways if you wanted to really understand some of the things that are going on in your keyboard this might be useful.
