I just bought a BBE Sonic stomp and so far I'm not crazy about the sound. I'm using a Green Bullet thru a '57 Champ with 12AU7. I find it only pumps up the treble and adds a harshness to the the sound. I was thinking about taking it back before the 2 week period runs out but I thought I should get some hints from others. What should I be trying, combination with other pedals, etc.?

Might be the way you're using it or some practice in set up.
I understood it was to be added at the end of an effects loop (last in a chain) to help balance the highs and lows of the loop.

Here's a review from a guitar website that I looked at when seeking my delay pedal.

"Ease of Use : 10
This is the most simple pedal ever made. All you have to do is put it at the end of your pedals right before the amp and dial in the amount of lows and highs you want. It's like a very simple eq on steroids. From what I've been told it corrects the phase of high and low frequencies so that they hit you at the same time providing clarity."

"'m using a Green Bullet thru a '57 Champ with 12AU7"

That's your problem.

Get a better mic and larger amp.

Hi Jaw:
I have a similar amp (Electro M8-E) with the same tube swap. I use a JT30 mic, an Echo Park delay and then the BBE sonic stomp maximizer. I really like the fullness and definition it adds.
I have a retired Green Bullet 520DX. I'll pull it out of the closet and do some A/B testing this weekend and see if I get any treble-y harshness and see what it takes to make that go away, different mic, settings, delay pedal or combination.

Thanx guys - I just noticed one typo (fat fingers) My champ is a '67, not '57. I will try it thru my Traynor Guitarmate see if I like it any better.
I have tried it with 3 different mics with no noticable improvement. What settings do you guys use?

I find Jason's setting of Lo Contour on 3 - Process on 6 works well. It also sounds better to my ear with a Shure 545SD or an Ev RE10 over a bullet mic.

It's a very subtle effect but as Jason says it is like putting your music in Hi-Def.

Thanx Kingley - I'll try those settings - I think I need to play around with different stuff - I think my expectations were very high of what the difference in the sound would be. Back to the drawing board!!

I have one for my guitar.
Can't say for harp use, I haven't
a mic for that yet.

It works better with my tube amp
than my solid state. I'm keeping it,
it's subtle but good. I've a hunch
that it may be more useful for
recording.

Good luck!

Hi All,
Messed around with my GB and JT30 into a BBE sonic maximizer and/or combinations of an Echo Park and Harp Commander.
The GB is much more dark sounding than the JT30. What I think the BBE is doing is pulling the highs back into balance with the lows. With the GB this is much more pronounced. My Brad Harrison Marine Band has this amazing sonic ring with a big fat chord. With the GB and the BBE off it drops some of the highs. When you turn on the BBE it brings them back, like it was when playing just acoustic. This does sound more trebley and depending on your amp volume, may sound harsh.
But, as XHarp said, I don't think the BBE is meant to be a single effect. It's trying to restore the signal from the effects of going through a chain of pedals.
When I add the HC and EP I think the BBE really juices up the sound. Gives it an alive punch.
The JT30 doesn't darken the tone as much as the GB so the effect isn't as pronounced but still brings the sound to life.
If I get the house to my self for an afternoon sometime I might make a video of this.

Thanx moose - I have noticed that in combo with my boss delay it is a bit more mellow. I find it works better with my EV641 and my Homemade mic and the Traynor Guitarmate amp. I think my biggest problem was my expectations. It was too noisey in the music store (guitars) to really hear what it was doing plus solid state amp and poor mic.
