My old buddy, Neil, brought his six-month-old bulldog over for a visit yesterday and he chewed up six harps---all wood combs; left my only composite and other plastic comb units alone for some reason. He really did a number on my Suzuki "Pure." His version of customizing, I surmise.
Hey, my fault! I left my case open and on the floor with a gregarious pup in the house (and, we, of course, took our eyes off the bow-legged bruiser). Hard to be mad very long, you gotta love this farting and snoring puppy---he's a trip---just gotta endure some of the puppy mischief.
Radiographic study showed that "Frosty" is fine. Which is good, because I damn near killed him (wait, wait, just kidding!)! (Before anyone writes, either Neil or I was abusive in ANY way...just upset with ourselves---we human are nearly always at fault for a dog's misdeeds or poor training.)
I've since found the covers/combs/screws, etc. we thought he might have ate. Our vet is a pal and guitar player, so the adventure was a bit of a reunion---and free! Whew, a normal Sunday vet call would have broke the bank.
Since, I have learned that Frosty has also eaten cell phones, wireless mouses and the entire corners off furniture...Neil is now using a crate more, increased exercise, vigilance, more basic obedience training, socializing and all that stuff. Ah, the travails of puppyhood.
Sometimes I'm glad to be a poor old teacher. At least I didn't loose any expensive 'bee's knees' custom harps. Bulldog Harps, by "Frosty." I like that.

Can't blame him for working on his embouchere! It seems that your 'tasty' harp licks are tastier than you thought... ---------- Crescent City Harmonica Club www.myspace.com/harpboytodd www.myspace.com/crescentcityharmonicaclub www.myspace.com/am540

If I had a Suzuki Fabulous and some puppy chewed on it I guess I'd eat the dog ;)
Since the dog shows some interest in harps you might as well teach him how to play. Now wouldn't that be a video to post on youtube? "Bulldog playing harp".

I wonder if Buddha has any suggestions on how to keep dogs from chewing on harps. My guess is you have to train it to have a good ear so it appreciates the gravity of it's actions...

I'm thinking dipping your harps in asparagus extract,if there were such an atrocity...that'll keep the dogs away or ,at least, my kids. ---------- Crescent City Harmonica Club www.myspace.com/harpboytodd www.myspace.com/crescentcityharmonicaclub www.myspace.com/am540

Besides putting the harps where the dog can't reach them, or putting them in a crate, giving the dog something to do helps.
We've got a couple Brittanys and they'll let us know if they're bored occasionally by gnawing on something. The older one ate glass Christmas tree ornaments when she was a pup, without any ill effects. The pup prefers shoes, specifically my shoes.
We try and get them plenty of exercise and crate them when we're gone. There's usually something authorized for chewing handy for them too.
