Do you articulate the same way you do on the lower holes?

Thanks 528hemi

The principle is exactly the same, I think.

Still, I hope you'll forgive my saying, but wouldn't this be better in the other thread today on the subject? Save splitting it all up.

Isn't the answer 'yes and no'? I mean, articulation is mainly for rhythm, and there's a lot less potential for that on holes 7-10, where melody predominates. You're not going to be doing many trainsongs on holes 7 & 8, are you!

No I don't articulate the same way, especially on the high holes of a high key. Andrew, I don't think you can relate articulation to just train songs...articulation is the way you use your mouth to shape the sound of any hole, not just chugging rhythms. But even really starting on the 6 blow I start to kind of close down the echo chamber in my head and do a lot of like "ooo-aaa" stuff...now that I sit down and think about it haha. I suppose what dictates the articulation is your style and the way you relate to the music being played around you.

Wally,

Any advice on how to articulate the following? The speed, by the way, is around 205 beats per minute:

4/4
4D' 4D 5D 4D' 4D 5D 4D' 4D 5D 4D' 4D 5D |

I've heard it done at that speed once and I felt like giving up. I put the details in the other thread below this one on articulation.

I figured that either:

a) the fella was using some very clever articulation;

b) he was super human, or;

c) it just needs about a trillion years' practice.

Any thoughts?

Man thats tricky, I think it would be a lot of practice because when I look at that I don't see articulation so much as I see SUPREME diaphragm conditioning and breath control. Some articulation that might help: really like "khh" on the 4 draw bend, like an inward cough. Think about bouncing that little punching bag in the back of your throat off the back of your throat. That helps to give a little seperation in the phrase and really helps the sounds from bleeding together. I don't know, I only tongue block so the way I articulate would be a lot different for the rest of the phrase. You might try something like "Kch-ii-tee", if that helps. Also, it might help if you think of it as being in 12/8 rather than 4/4. Well, thats my two cents on that issue. Thanks for asking too, makes me feel semi-respected haha.

any fast passage with two or more consecutive blow or draw notes can benefit from articulation to clarify notes in my opinion

another way i think of it is that really fast changes in breath direction are more possible with changing mouth volume than rapid diaphragm movements, and I think that is where lots of the attack comes from when you play rapidly high or low. That is you start a note with articulation and changing mouth shape and enforce the air flow with diaphragm

Buddha had a comment on one of his vids about vibrato from the mouth being faster on the attack and i think this is the same concept

I agree with walterharp. For single note playing I articulate. Come to think of it, I try to articulate as much on single notes as I can get away with.
