A few years back, a musician buddy was having some money problems, and asked to borrow some $$$. I had a little extra at the time so I loaned him several hundred $$. In return, he had some items he wasn't using much, so he let me use them and as collateral. Two basic speaker tilt stands, a folding mic stand, and a Peavey PVM-38 mic in the rather nice metal case. Months passed, and we saw each other occaisionally, and he always ackowledged the debt, but didn't have any to pay back. Finally he had all but 75$, and asked if I kept the stuff, would we be square. Well, I didn't want to say no, but I figured the stands were worth it and the mic case. I never got a good sound out of the mic...either direct into the PA or with amps. Not with harp or just vocals. Always sounded mushy. I kinda just put it away and forgot about it.
Then I got to thinking....Maybe it needs a different element? ...and I disassembled it. Well waddaya know, after unscrewing the metal ball grille, here is this big piece of HEAVY foam between it and the pickup! No wonder it sounded like playing thru a pillow!
I removed the foam, then experimented without it, in my classic amps and the new Blackheart. Used the line transformer...both for XLR to 1/4 and to try lo/z and hi/z. WOW! with hi/z. Very hot, though...picked up every little breath. Had some batting handy, and found that two layers wrapped with a sturdy rubber band over the element did the trick. Now, the BH-15H sings on the 7W setting, and if I want to really crank it on the 15W, I have to turn down both vol and drive @ 12:00 or less!
I've seen these around, and didn't pick them up unless the price was right for just the decent case. I'll have to look around some more. This sounds better ( for harp ) than my SM-58 OR my bandmates SM-58 beta!
The only drawback is that there is no volume knob on the mic, but I'll work on that
