Hi, I have decided spend some money on harmonicas this weekend. I have been contemplating Seydel Favorite Black. I have never owned Seydel, and would really appreciate some real info on it. Thanks.

I dont know about the Favorite Black but my harp of choice is the Seydel Soloist Pro. They are the best out the box harp ive had. To be honest there is no difference between the soloist pro and the 1847. My advice would be to try a Seydel, they are superb harps.
I think the favorite Black is the at the cheaper end price wise so you might want to consider one of the pro models. ----------

The Favorite and favorite black are good. The Favorite black was the premium Seydel before the 1847, but it never really had that flagship role the 1847 enjoys. It is the most expensive of the brass reed Seydels. The only difference between it and the regular favorite is that it has a black aluminum comb as opposed to a grey one. It and the favorite typically have the best reedplates of the brass reed seydels. I used to build customs with favorite reedplates and wood combs, but stopped because it was expensive to build them that way. ---------- www.elkriverharmonicas.com

Thanks, I believe that 1847 in any variant is about 50% more expensive, and I'm simply not good enough for such an instrument. On the other like I like aluminum comb ao I'll go for Favorite. Would it be possible to replace reeds with steel ones later? That would probably be as close as you can get to harmonica that you can carry with you to afterlife...

you've made a wise decison buying a Seydel. I must of been mistaken when i said the Favorite Black was at the cheaper end of the market(sorry),listen to ElkriverHarmonicas he knows what he's talking about. I have an 1847 in A which i bought last month and it is a very good harp but i find my Soloist Pro's play about the same and like you said 1847's aint cheap. Let us know how you get on with the Favorite Black, i've always wanted a Black harp for some reason. ----------

I think Ant was talking about a Session, which also has a black comb, albeit a plastic one. There aren't a whole lot of Favorite Blacks out there. I've sold maybe four in the past three years. THat's not because they are not good. They are very good. I think it's because of the price difference between it and the regular Favorite, it's about $10 more and the 1847 has claimed a lot of its previous market. I like the coverplates a lot better on the Favorite Black and it looks 20x cooler than the regular Favorite. It's really a beautiful harmonica.

Thanks, I will definitely go for it and will let you know of my experience. You will of course take into account that I'm not very experienced. :-)

OK, this is off point, but I've had the weirdest question running through my head about steel reeds. Can you mess with the sound by putting strong magnets near them?
I'm just weird. I think of weird things like this. I was wondering if a strong magnet on the top might pull the reed up faster and let it go back slower, altering the timber.

As Dave said >I like the coverplates a lot better on the Favorite Black< . Yeah, me too, those lids of the Blacks are much, much more stable (to an occasional impact - like when they get dropped to a stone floor! ). The Favorite's lids get much easier bent out of shape if they get dropped...
The Black's lids are also a bit lower than the 1847's, which probably is positive for smaller hands, negative if you keep your jaws closed up more...

I LOVE the Favorite Black! It has a good sound. It's pretty much a Solist Pro with a black aluminum comb instead of wood. The cover plates have a slightly lower profile than the Solist, but the feel is pretty much the same. I would suggest getting one as I have several of them and they are all awesome! I play mainly 1847's, but I can't afford those in all the keys. Actually, the Blues Sessions are really good too... like a Special 20 with different covers. I find that Seydel harps are VERY playable right out of the box... even the cheap ones, IMHO are better than a well broken-in Sp20! This is just my opinion of course.

Is the 1847 and it's variants the only one with stainless steel reeds?

nacoran, wouldn't that screw with mic elements? Might be impractical for that reason even if it does work. Thats a cool question to ponder though

I played around with magnets/steel reeds a while back. No difference in anything. The 1847 and variants, including the Saxony chromatic are the only harmonicas with stainless steel reeds, except for the STAHLKLANGE made by Hans Eisen before Hohner shut him down in the late 1930s. That's it. But there are steel reeds in a lot of accordions. ---------- www.elkriverharmonicas.com

Hi, in the end I have bought 1847... I got great deal and bought it for the same price as Favorite Black. I guess I can buy Favorite later as this was too great deal to miss. Thank you for your suggestions everyone.

I think that you made the right choice. I personally don't like the aluminum combs based on my limited experience. I think that I have a Blues Favorite Standard, not the black, and the comb on that had a nasty metallic taste. Maybe the anodized aluminium comb is better? In any case I ended up putting clear nail polish over the front of the comb.
How did you find such a deal on 1847s? I've bought a few at Guitar Center with 10%/15% off coupons when they had some in, but this is a better deal.
Maybe we should ask Adam if it's ok to have a deal/coupon thread for great deals.
