No. above the background noise it would be too quiet. For speech, work on the basis of 1 person = 1W. Also bear in mind that more speakers are blown by running an underspec amp into clipping, than by using an overspec amp. I think in a room that size you should be looking somewhere between 500W and 1K

Go with a Peavey 8600 gives you more channels then you need for the AV Dept or if needed for school plays. They are built like stones and last forever and enough power to cover your Auditorium nicely. I think they are 250w per side if you run monitors or 500w running just mains. Also has a small equalizer which is just as handy to get a nice speaking voice as it is to music.

Thanks for the advice guys. It has been very helpful. To answer your question BBQbob I don't know. I get a price, give it to the PTA and they raise the money.

One alternative mau be, if the main purposes are assemblies and PTA meetings would be considering one of two Fender Passport self-contained portable PA's, one being the PD-250 (The one in the black casing) which has Bose designed speakers and comes with most everything you need other than a mic stand or the PD-500, which is 500W stereo @ 8ohms per side, and they both fold together like a suitcase and they'er pretty damned good for small gigs.
