Hey guys, I was wondering what tools you need for a great tool kit. I've been looking on the Seydel and Lee Oskar sites at their kits, but I already have some of the tools. I have a good screwdriver set that works on my harps. A nice soft felt workspace, craft picks, needle nose plyers (I'm thinking about dipping them in a nylon cover so they don't mar stuff.) I think the next thing I need is files. How do I know what files to get. Will hobby files work? What else do I absolutely need. (I'm trying to learn gapping, embossing, tuning, opening up the backs.)

Thanks,
Nate

You seem to have all the essential regular tools--now you might need a few of the more harp specific kinds of tools, like reed scrapers and a good file and etc. I got the kit from Richard Sleigh and I like it very much for these specialized tools. The DVD from Rupert Oysler shows how to make some of the tools.

I think Buddha also offers a good tool kit--also Dave Payne of Elk River Harps. I have read that there is a Seydel kit that is very good.

The files and scrapers need to be of very high quality--I had a set of little files from Home Depot that just didn't work well at all, and helped me to destroy a couple of harps.

Once you have a good set of the core tools--the stuff like anvils, small hammer, etc are easy to pick up at craft stores and yard sales. . .

The Seydel kit has very high quality tools and also Richard Sleigh of the Filisko guild of customizers, http://www.customharmonicas.com, have professional grade tool kits. Any tools that are cheap are gonna usually made in China and any tools made in China are flat out horrible, and if you buy them, you got exactly what you paid for. Chinese made tools has only one place in my house: the garbage can.

What about other fine-mechanical tools - like dentists' and watchmaker tools. I'm sure there's some tools that could be applied to harp works. Anyone has tried that out?

Shofu Brownies, Dremel rotary tool kits. Those samll screwdrivers being used ae often referred to as jeweler's screwdrivers. Dental scrapers are great for extremely fine tuning reeds and you can find them in any medical supply store.
