Im sure im one of the older guys on this site, now in my sixties.Having played in small clubs for quite a while now I was wondering if any if you fellow grey hairs play with some of the effects out there on the market? Im thinking about getting a Delay Pedal. I know they have been around a while but for 40 years it was just me and my Bassman and the million differant guys i played with.Any thoughts are appreciated.

Hi Delta. On the forum search or maybe also in the archives, you'll see several threads to dig thru for info on delay pedals. I own a couple. For slapback, vintage-type delay, I have a Lone Wolf Delay V2, which I love(plus, it's made right here in Louisiana). For psychadelic crazy delay, I have a Guyatone MD2 which is great. I think you just opened a can of worms... ---------- GO SAINTS! crescentcityharmonicaclub@gmail.com

I like a little bit of delay and/or a little bit of reverb with harp and guitar. For my guitar amp, Fender Blues Deluxe RI, the reverb is on all the time, not much past 4. I kick the delay, Danelectro DanEcho in sometimes depending on the tune and the room. Blowing harp through it I back both off even more. Actually like delay more for harp. When using our PA for the harp I tried the reverb built into the mixer and a Tech21 RVB pedal. Didn't like either and stick to the delay pedal. Not against trying out more reverb pedals when the budget allows. Hear good things about the Line 6 VerbZilla. Also when using the PA I have come up with some interesting overdrive and tube amp emulation with a SansAmp Para Driver DI which I use for my bass through the PA. Kind or a challenge to find stuff to use for both harp and guitar. Not into effects for bass at all but wonder if they might be better suited for harp.

The Lone Wolf pedals are made specifically for harmonica, although some guitarists use them as well. ---------- GO SAINTS! crescentcityharmonicaclub@gmail.com

I would love to try the Lone Wolf Harp Attack pedal but again budget restraints. Have to use what I have until they break. Can't even break my SansAmp or Dano pedal's "accidentely" running over them with a pickup truck.

Delta, The Lone Wolf is a quality piece of equipment, I owne one. They have a good return policy if ya done't like it. I have had good results with a $30 Berringer?spelling. delay pedal before I got the Lone Wolf, I still use it on another mic set up. I've tried reverb but I seem to get more feed back with them. Other pedals are fun but Delay is my bread and butter. Mike

I have found a few settings on my digitech rp80 that sound really good. The newer models are better, i guess. At least more well known. Richard hunter has presets already figured out for some of them on his website. I copied them into mine as best i could, given the different parameters available and they work well in mine too. It gives me a super portable option for this one tiny stage i play open mic jam nights on...di into the PA and I'm set. The guitar guys can bring their little amps if they want, i just bring a briefcase.

@ Delta-We hold monthly meetings and discuss a lot of stuff that's covered here. Either myself or the other co-founder usually try to have a loose structure. When we get new folks, we try to start by going around the room to each person for intros and to play a little bit, if able to. Sometimes we'll experiment with ensemble playing, or work thru different positions and scales, or jam along with guitar, jam tracks or each other. There's always show and tell with harps, mics and amps, too. Oh, and we drink copious amounts of beer.

I also have an older rp200 that I loaded with some of Richard Hunter's patches, but I never use it. Like congaron says, it's a di thing to the pa-HORRIBLE results when used with a tube amp, but if one had the time to tinker enough with it and dial out some of the gain, etc., it might be more useful with a tube amp. It had some varying delay and reverb effects, but I'm a firm believer that there's such a thing as too many bells and whistles. Too much to deal with in a live setting for one pedal. I dig a delay with only a few controls for delay time, effect%, saturation, etc. ---------- GO SAINTS! crescentcityharmonicaclub@gmail.com

@ Bluzdude-I had two Danechos-One just died on me, so I got another, and it got 'borrowed' forever. I liked the sound and the fact it could double as a weapon if needed, but man, if you didn't have an AC adapter, your battery budget woould go thru the roof. Do the mini pedals chew up batteries, too? ---------- GO SAINTS! crescentcityharmonicaclub@gmail.com

Besides delay or reverb, I use a Dunlob Rotovibe to get a Leslie cabinet organ effect, which is sweet on chords/octaves. Lone Wolf(Randy Landry)makes 5 or 6 pedals specifically for harp. His pedals are more geared towards blues tone and making your amp sound fatter or crunchier, based off his perception of the 'Chicago' Sound. If you wanna see/hear what mutiple varied effects can do, check out the likes of Buddha(Chris Michalek) or Jason Ricci...out of this world stuff that will make you look twice to see if the sound is actually coming from a harmonica. ---------- GO SAINTS! crescentcityharmonicaclub@gmail.com

Yup! I like my Danecho too, but these days I tend to play dry and let the soundman add in the effects. The Danecho gets criticised as a tone sucker, but I actually liked the way it affected my sound. The cheap Danelectro pedals are OK too. I used the Fish & Chips e.q. and the Corned Beef reverb too in the past. Plastic cases and flimsy knobs though - not good for a band the size of a football team trying to fit on a stage the size of a coffee table!
Others I'd recommend: EH Holy Grail reverb and EH POG

I use the Harp Attack direct to PA with a Fender reverb pedal (by Boss) and cab modeling DI box in between. Sounds like an amp and much easier to carry. I haven't used the Harp Attack with my tube amp yet as the amp has plenty of gain and tone on its own (Fat Dog 2A 2x10).

"cab modeling DI box"? Interesting...have you compared this to a regular -20db DI? If so, what's the sound difference?
*EDIT*-duh, i have an old Hughes and Kettner Red Box, which is what that is, I believe...and I'm getting my own Harp Attack pedal in a few weeks, so i'll try it out...I'm guessing it adds more bottom end? ---------- GO SAINTS! crescentcityharmonicaclub@gmail.com

I go back and forth on pedals, I have several I've collected, and even put together a pedal board (in an old Samsonite briefcase)so they'd be more portable and managable. I have a Lone Wolf Harp Delay, Harp Octave, Boss AD-3 acoustic processor (reverb, chorus, bass and treble controls, anti-feedback), Boss OC-2 octave, Maxon AF-9 envelope filter (autowah), and BBE sonic stomp. But to tell the truth, the only one I use consistently is the Harp Delay, just a touch to fatten up the sound.

@toddlgreene, yes, that kind of DI. Mine is actually a Behringer, because I couldn't find a used H&K. I think it adds a bit of bottom, but it definitely cuts a bit of top end. The tone doesn't sound as shrill direct through the PA with the cab sim on. My DI only has 4x12 sim, but the H&K also has 1x10 I think, which might be better for harp.

I don't worry too much about the battery (I have adapter) or the case strength It's always on and sits nicely on top of the amp as a part of the food chain. If I was using it as an actual STOMP box you are right I doubt it would hold up
