I'm in the fetal stages of getting a band together, right now we are discussing what songs we want to learn. I really want to cover holler for craig lawler, I think my guys would be down to play it but I am having some trouble figuring it out. I don't want to bring it up until I know what I'm doing with it I guess (don't ask me why haha). Could you give me any information at all? Don't even think about tabs or anything (thats like cheating and an ass load of work you don't need) just like what key is the song in/ what key and position on the harp, and maybe, just maybe, some chords for my guitar player? My best guess is that its a Bb harp in third position blues...or maybe second position in some minor mode? Oh, one more thing: is there a key change before starski solos or is it just a solo over a different chord progression within the key? I think its a key change but my 4 draw is flated out on my Bb and I can't tell, it seems my ears are playing tricks on me. Thanks a BUNCH for any of these questions you would answer!

wllyns- I know you said you don't want to cheat, but there is a free plug-in for Windows Media Player called Muse-On Music Detection Plug-In. It works in the visualization pane. It figures out what chords are playing and gives it's best guess on the key. Sometimes it has problems telling the key, but it's usually close. It might not be able to tell C from G, for instance, since they are really close on the circle of fifths, but it's a good place to jump off from.
The only downside is sometimes it will crash Media Player, but only occasionally, and only when you have it active, so it's not a big problem that will ruin things. I use it to make add key listings for all the songs I want to play.

wallyns,
If you can't figure out the key using a harp, sit down at a piano, and listen to the song. Hum the root note, then find it on the piano.
To figure out the position, listen to the notes near the root note. Listen close to the harp, trying to detect which notes are bent, etc... Start with 2nd and 3rd position.
2nd position = pick a harp that is a 4th above the root. 3rd position = pick a harp that is a whole step below the root.

It's a low F harp I believe. The song is in C. The chord throughout the whole song is some sort of C (no guitar present right now). Then in the chorus there is a quick switch to an F chord I believe? This is just a slight guess.

ok so if its a low F in C that would be second position, so if I played a Bb in third it would work as long as I make sure none of the riffs go below a Bb if I'm not mistaken. I'm not TOO worried about the chords cus my guitar player has a phenominal ear and would probably be able to figure it out with a little work, but still would be nice just to say here they are. Thanks guys

Hey almost guys! It is definitely a low F harp, you'll need the 5 over blow to play the head but your 3rd position idea would work in the first octave (might even sound better! the guitar solo goes to Eb I used an Ab to play the opening lick with Shawn. Then the harp solo's just a high F. I'm flattered your covering this tune and stoked for craigs name to live on even stronger through you and I love that you didn't ask for tab!! Email me off list and I'll get you my number call me any time. J
