I love the feel and sound of a marine band harp. But for feel on your lips a spec 20 seems to be more comfortable plus the fact you can change the reeds. Is there a solution to this from the marine band point of view or do you think its time marine bands join the growing number of replaceable reeds etc and screw in type harps?

Your prob right buddha and im an ol sentimentalist esp being an englishman. But i havent the skill to customise my own harp yet maybe in the future. I have no complaints about the marine band or spec 20 out of the box guys like me just love to play. But if you use an chomatic tuner not many are perfect nor are all of us ha ha

If your problem are the nail on the Marine Band: you can replace them with screws. I did that on a MB (used nice looking brass screws) and find it to be quite easy.
I still prefer the Special 20s. The OTB quality is very consistent and they sound great.

It's true that SP20s are more comfy than MBs on the lips. But, you can get used to MBs without bleeding all over the comb, which I used to do. It just takes time, I suppose. ---------- YouTube SlimHarpMick

I live 5 minutes from the godiva chocolate factory so for my final step after gapping my marine bands, I candy coat them. Really smooth after that. ---------- ~Ryan Pennsylvania - H.A.R.P. (Harmonica Association 'Round Philly)

That's either subtle pure comedy gold or your about to get an earful. I haven't played one of Buddha's harps. I can't afford one, but they get rave reviews. You can't read too many threads on here before Buddha will tell you that himself!

I wonder if embouchure has something to do with how MBs are on the lips? Are you more likely to be uncomfortable using lip pursing than tongue blocking?

I can lip purse & tongue block everything & depending on the song I might be doing both switching back and forth. Only problem I have with comfort regarding marine bands is the corners of the reed plates tend to be sharp out of the box but really I dont come into contact with them much aside from 1 draws. I would have to go out of my way to do myself physical harm playing one.

Marine Bands are horrible for U-blockers, I've goten so many cuts and soars on the tip of my tongue from swollen combs it gets ridiculous at times. I think I may be developing callouses haha. When I get into it though I play really hard and just murder the crap out of Special 20 reeds so I stay away from them, MB's can take much more stress it seems. I flatted out a SP 20 E in a week and a half once

Sand and seal dude.
Or perhaps you might just condition your tongue with a cheese grater.

Extra fine sandpaper on all the sharp edges and blue painters tape to protect the reed plate fixes this and it's quick. Blue tape leaves to residue benind.
