I used to make fine duck calls and as part of that work, there were lots of really great tonewoods which were particularly good for the toneboards.

Additionally, duck calls have many of the same moisture problems that harps have (same breath issues).

So, some of the great woods we used were:

Cocobolo - machines well, does not swell as its moisture resistant. Some people do have an allergic reaction to it, so it would obviously not be for everyone....

Bois D'arc (osage orange) - machines extremely well, somewhat moisture resistant. Great tonewood.

Ebony - Similar to Cocobolo, but very expensive.

Any thoughts on these?

I just made some ebony Golden Melody combs. Ridiculously hard. Shredded the disk on a bench disk sander instantly.
Beautiful though.
