Going off the diatonic track for a minute, does anyone have any of the Chromatix series harps? ie. 48, 56, 64. I'm buying one off Ebay pretty soon in the key of C, just wondering if anyone has their 2 cents on the model. Thanks, Corey

The only chromatic I've played is a Chrometta 12 in G and I'm still just messing with it. The only harp I've heard much about is the Hohner CX-12, which I heard positives about.

I have a Suzuki scx56. It has taken a little while to get used to after playing my Hohners. It really does have the look and feel of a quality instrument. I'm just kicking myself for not getting the scx64 instead, but I bought this a few years ago on impulse when it was on sale without doing any research. Sometimes you just want to get those really low notes...

ahh really, I actually changed my mind to a 56 as well, but i'm curious to know what the price of a 64 would be, but I can't find it on ebay anywhere. I've never played chromatic before so do you think a scx 56 is a sufficient learning device as well as a quality instrument?

My first chromatic was a Hohner 260 (ten hole)in C and as far as I'm concerned it's a fine learning device. Since then I've purchased a Hohner 270 (12 hole) in C and in G and the above mentioned Suzuki in C. The Suzuki is a nice harp, but I actually prefer the Hohners. My next (and hopefully last) chromatic purchase will probabley be the Hohner 280. You might be able to find a Hohner 260 somewhere on ebay cheap.

Ive got the SCX48 in A. Ive been playing it along with my other Hohner Chromatics. I think its a well made instrument. It has held up for me on stage now for about a year....use it on several songs.

I have a SCX48. Have had it 12 months & it is a lovely instrument. I also have an older Hohner Super Chromonica & there is no comparison ie the Suzuki is miles ahead ie more responsive & comfortable to play.
I initially had issues with the SCX which were quickly resolved with advice received from Brendan Power. The problem was with the windsaver valves & the remedy was simple.
The above said in comparison with diatonics I now rarely play my chromatix.

It seems to me that it takes less air for me to play the Hohner than the Suzuki. Don't get me wrong. The Suzuki is a fine instument, and if you get one, you'll be more than pleased with it. A little inspiration from John Nemeth. When I first saw this video I thought he was playing a Suzuki, but now I'm not sure what it is.

I have 3 chromatics, all bought used, 2 Hohners, 1 Gretsch, none are terrific. What I've read is that the consumer models (under $200.00) leave a lot to be desired. Custom work on a chromatic is not cheap or easy to do. I've heard the new Suzukis are pretty good, the Seydel Saxony has received some rave reviews too, it cost around 350.00. I haven't spent much time with mine, I still prefer the diatonic for most of the songs I play, but I think all harp players owe it to themselves to try a chromatic. If I thought I would give the chromatic a serious effort I might spring for a nice one. This is the dilemma, go cheap and be disappointed or spend the bucks and decide it's not the instrument for me.

Yeah, thats true, I didn't know gretsch even made harmonicas.
I guess money's money in the end and not ever knowing is the worst thing. you said you bought used chromatics - you can always sell it again?
