I can do overblows on holes 1,2,4,5,6 on my Manjis but they squeel alot. How can they be adjusted? Is it the gapping? The regular draws and blows sound sweet?
I am also working on my technique. I am still learning to be consistant. What about getting honking ( like a goose ) IS this caused by technique or a harp that is not adjusted for optimum overblows?
When I do get the honking I am hitting the right but cant get a nice smooth note.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks 528hemi

Sounds like you need to work on both: technique and gapping.
Sorry, that probably wasn't the answer you were looking for, but there it is.

That was the same criticism of Lee Oskar harps way back when the overblow technique started to take off. Something to do with torsional rigidity. People were adding small squares of tape (circuit board drafting black layout tape?) to the reed ends to act as a small stabilizing sail.

Actually, the method I've heard some OB'ers use is nail polish on the riveted end to cut down on the torsional problems, and LO's were really notorious for that. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

The tape method works, use micropore surgical tape and stick a small square about 2/3 the way down the reed. The nail varnish method that BBQ Bob mentioned works too. Personally I've started using a blob of dental wax over the rivet and foot of the reed. It's cheap, available at most pharmacists and sticks well to the metal, but can be removed or repositioned easily. Simpler and less permanent than nail varnish. Try overblow.com and tenhole.com for more tips on OB setup.

Also beeswax; you can get it online and it makes the harp taste nice for a week or so.

Part of it might also be because of the technique. At least for me, I can get pure sounding OB's when I carefully adjust my tongue etc but some holes like 4 are difficult for me to get right immediately.
Propably the other part is the Manji's mechanics as others have pointed out.

I saw the Beeswax on the rivet trick online and did all my (then stage harp) SP20's that were also embossed and gapped. Unfortunately I left my case in my vehicle a little longer then I had planned and the beeswax softened and gummed up the reeds pretty well. I still use beeswax cut with mineral oil to seal combs but putting that piece on the rivet end of a reed ain't happening anymore. What a mess! For the record my OB squeal like a scared virgin too. Someday I may be able to play these damn things

Laughing at all those Hohner haters who squealed with delight at the new Manji, as advertised in so deadpan a manner by by Brendan Power, and couldn't wait to buy one when it was still hot off the shelf, and now the cracks are beginning to show. ---------- Kinda hot in these rhinos!

Buddha, I think in another post you'd mentioned that your manji, now that you've done some work on it, is a part of your gigging set of harps. Does this mean you figured out how to fix the problem the manji had with sustaining the overblows? Or do you only use it to play things where overblows are either used as passing tones or not at all?
I was thinking of ordering one and trying the "tape trick" on in it, since it worked on one of my other harps that squealed when you held one of the overdraws for too long. If it doesn't work I suppose I'll use it for stuff that doesn't require sustained overbends.

yes, my manji doesn't squeal because I tweaked it. In fact, it's currently employed as my regular key of A harp for rehearsals.
When I spoke with the Suzuki boys, they are well aware of the issue and they had me play other prototype manjis that had reeds with different profiles. Ultimately they said, longevity was more important that the ability to OB without squeals.

May I ask exactly what tweak you used to get rid of the squeal(assuming it's not a trade secret)? Thanks.
