Who likes what and why?
I love the classic warmth of a good used pair of 6V6's, but that is what I find I like: used, but good. Mainly from the 40's to early 60's. What I have heard from newer tubes is either they are too loud or flat. Not much tone at all. Thankfully, there still are quite a few older tubes around that don't cost more than your amp did.
As for the 6BQ5's, I find they have more dynamic range, can be tamed and voiced easier and better with good pre-amp tube selection, and there are values in new as well as NOS tubes.
So, I guess I would say I prefer 6V6's for recording, and 6BQ5's for live performance.
If any like 6L6's or EL34's, hop on and say why!

It all depends on the amp and the circuitry of the amp when it comes to either of those tubes. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

The circuitry is designed around the power tubes that the creator chose. You have to consider the amp as a whole tone generator not judge it solely by what type of power tubes are used. I've heard really good tone from both types of power tubes and some not so good. It also depends on how the amp is biased, if it is too cold then a 6V6 can sound lifeless compared to a properly biased EL84. You can't judge a car based on the tires alone.

Given the choice between EL84 and 6V6, I *much* prefer the tone from most 6V6 amps. ---------- -Rick Davis Blues Harp Amps Blog Roadhouse Joe Blues Band

I think smaller 5w amps are good with single EL84's. I prefer 6v6 in larger amps that have "paired" 6v6's
