I'm heading off today for Chicago, anyone recommend any open mics you might know of or clubs to hit. I'm staying downtown but only till Thursday. I know it's short notice but worth a try. Thanks!

Will you have a car? There's a good blues/soul/funk open mic night in Hammond IN: Larosa's Pizzeria and Bar on Indianapolis Blvd.

Sometimes you can catch someone good at Buddy Guy's "Legends"- don't know about now, but the food used to be awsome- real soul food- collard greens, black eyed peas, fried chicken....piled high.

Be sure and check out Rosa's. It's on West Armitage, near north side.

I checked their schedule, and it seems Rosa's will only be open Tuesday when you're there. Maybe see bout Kingston Mines or Blues Etc.

Highway Rickey of the Filisko crew hosts a jam on Tuesdays in Blue Island. Don't know the particulars.

Been awhile - I used to play some at a club owned by John Belushi's brother. They had a Monday night open jam. It was a damn goodone too. I met several celebs and producers in the audience. Can't find a website. Might check the phonebook. Like I said I haven't played Chicago in several years.

I haven't been to Chicago in about 10 years but the last trip I made there I went to Kingston Mines. It had a cool setup with two separate rooms with a common bar in the middle. Two bands would set up and then trade sets. The audience would move from one side of the bar to the other fore each set. ----------

I doubt you'll be able to find an open mic in the "premiere" blues clubs in the loop/near north-side. If you do some scrounging through google or the likes you'll be able to find a bunch, but they are going to be actual bars on the south-side and surounding suburbs. The only one that I have heard of that I remember is in Blue Island, I want to say its on Western Av. somewhere between 115th and 131st. I can't think of the name of the joint though. I had a list of jams that I wanted to check out but I don't know what happened to it. I have yet to capitalize on any since I'm not "legal" yet, I am only home during summers, and I've only been playing for a year. If I remember correctly there is another on Harlem but its like either way south (159th+) or like 81st+-. Again I can't recall anything else about it. Sorry couldn't be of more help, I feel like I'm letting you down...being a native and all haha

Thanks for the suggestions. I was at a conference and as I thought would happen I didn't get as much free time as I hoped for and no car makes taking cabs too far a distance pretty expensive. I made it to Blue Chicago on Clark and heard the JW Williams Band with Patricia Scott. All great players (no harp)and great singer, so at least I got my blues fix. Here's a clip of the same band, the guitar player I saw is the 1st.solo also great man on keys. Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7kzyFYgJ7g&feature=related
