Today as I was walking to work I had my iPod on and was listening to a recording from made a few years ago at Jason Ricci's Blowout at SPAH. Many great players including Pat Ramsey on it.

However what struck me most was how hard Dennis Gruenling swings. I have long been a fan of Dennis' playing but in this live recording I was reminded of what a totally amazing player he really is.

I can't recall ever hearing any harmonica player (including Cotton, Walter et al) swing with the depth that Dennis does.

His love of the old Jazz / Jump Blues horn trios shows through in everything he does.

I found this recording as a free download from a link in one of Sorins YouTube videos. Do yourselves a favour and download this great recording. It features Jason Ricci, Dennis Gruenling, Pat Ramsey and some others.

But for me the highlight is Dennis Gruenlings set. The way that New Blood back him and Gina Fox is simply taste personified.

Shawn Starski plays some truly wonderful parts on the guitar and the interaction between him and Dennis is simply magical.

I just love his LW tribute CD- I Just Keep Lovin' Him. With Kim Wilson,Rick Estrin & Steve Guyger. There's enough on there to keep me woodshedding for years.

Great player and good guy. I first met him in 2003 when I was at Scullers here in Boston at Jerry Portnoy's 60th birthday party gig.
