For those among us that use valved amps....

What have you found is a satisfying complement?

I will start with a serendipitous surprise:
My new piggyback Blackheart BH-15H sounded great with two 12AY7's in both pre-amp slots...so naturally, I had to try something else.
I swapped the V2 for a premium 7062. Sounded OK, but not as good as the two 12AY7's.
So I popped the AY back in.

I consider what to do with the 7062 Amperex. Seems like one of the best uses is as a phase inverter, like Fender has used a 12AT7.
I go to my now vintage Traynor and pull the 12AT7WA/6201 that is in the V6 PI slot and install the 7062.
HOLY MOLEY! It turned the channel 2 effects/dirty into a honking Chicago beast, but tamed.
It had been just kind of fuzzy/warm cool jazz before.
Then I plugged the mic into the #1 clean channel.
O M G! LOUD! Very Clean. TOO loud...and this is with a reduced gain tube in the V1 slot!
Soooo, I turn off the amp, let cool down, then swap the V1 tube for a super mellow 12AU7.

This sounds like a Butterfield/SBII blend. Actual distortion in the clean channel.

[ It may help that the Traynor YGL-3 Mark III amp 2X12 that I am using may be one of the most overengineered amps ever. The Canadian techs looked at a Fender Twin Reverb, and then cloned it with an almost doubled chassis frame. I have tried Fender TR's, Bassman's, Bandmasters, Blackfaces, Silverfaces, Blues Devilles and they all pale to this 125 watt beast.
Not your usual harp amp, but it works for me. ]
