I think I'm going to show people how to play a first-postion shuffle chord-rhythm that I've been working on, along with other things. At bare minimum, people should bring A, C, and D harps. Maybe F and B-flat. I can't imagine that I would ask anybody to play anything in a key other than those five.

One thing I like to do in clinics--i.e., when I'm face to face with people in a teaching situation--is invite anybody who wants to to play for me (and the whole group) and quickly diagnose both strengths and things that need working on. (None of us have weaknesses; we have things we don't do as well as we might--yet.) Video interchange can accomplish some of this, but face-to-face is much quicker, Little Cricket.

The price is great. The opportunity as well. The 60 mile one way trip to Philly from Bethlehem after work in NJ I can do without and hope weather is not a factor. Was all set to go to the H.A.R.P. club party / jam. Weather was so-so and I was taking wife and sister, but then wife did not feel well. This trip is a solo so weather is less a factor. I heard I missed a good time.

I'm he, and it's a fair question. I definitely won't be pitching the level of what I say PRIMARILY to beginners, because most people at the clinic won't be beginners. If the clinic I gave several years ago in Philly is any guide, the average level will be somewhere between intermediate and advanced intermediate, as described on the "What Level Are You?" page of this website. In that clinic, sponsored by a harmonica group, there were at least two or three professionals, including Seth Holtzman. (I'd call a professional somebody who makes a part- or full-time living playing and teaching harmonica.) Two-thirds of the people, I'm guessing, had played at jam sessions and/or played occasional gigs with blues bands or folk duos.

That leaves some people who weren't quite as strong, but who were serious harmonica students determined to soak up as much as they can, plus maybe one or two people who had just picked up a harp and were fascinated by our raucous and deceptively difficult little instrument.

A clinic is useful in different ways for different levels of players. For a player who is new to the instrument, a clinic can immediately and decisively plunge you into the subculture. You'll learn a dozen useful things: who the good players are in your area, whose recordings you should be listening to, what good playing sounds like live, what sorts of questions more advanced students are asking, and so forth.

I'll be in attendance :) - I've even got dinner reservations, lol.

Most of the guys I know around Philly are at least intermediate (including yours truly).

I look forward to hanging out with other players, especially Adam, in a non-virtual environment ;) .

The H.A.R.P. jam was nothing short of amazing djm3801! Unfortunately no one brought a video camera!! I'm really hoping that we could do that sort of thing quarterly. I'm looking around Philly/Lancaster, etc for a place I can go & play with other musicians like that monthly.

I made reservations for dinner at 5:30pm. Not sure if Jon was gonna be there at that time? Maybe I could cancel my reservations and set it for 5 people or something just in case?

@Gwood:

Actually, no. One of the nice things about the real, as opposed to virtual, world is that we can choose to keep it real. When I do clinics, I want there to be an element of safety in the room: precisely because there's an element of existential risk in a bunch of people--musicians in training--actually being present to one another, I like to remove the risk that would take every little gesture and potentially put it out there for the world to see. When we draw that sort of chalk circle around the clinic room, it makes the real community that is created on that given evening a little bit more....real.

I have no objection if people record the clinic for their own private use. That's fine with me--as long as they're not actually holding up cameras and looking through viewfinders rather than being in the room and paying attention. But I'll make it clear before we begin--as I always do at Jon Gindick's camps--that we're not getting together for the purposes of making a YouTube movie. We're getting together for the purpose of trying to improve OUR game. If you paid your money, you're there and you get to enjoy something singular and real. That's my one ground rule. I sometimes ask people to play in front of the assembled room. I don't want anybody to hesitate because they're afraid of being revealed to the world as a less-than-perfect player. I want everybody to feel as though they've got one room of players to play for and they're part of THAT and nothing else.

I hope that makes sense. Your question is certainly a fair one.

Fellas, I set aside a table for 8 at 5:30pm at Rembrandt's. It's under Ryan but he also wrote down that it's the harmonica group table ;) . Anyway, he said they'd be prepared for a little more or less. If anyone has any questions or concerns on this you can contact me at my youtube listed in my signature.

Hey Ryan, To answer your question raised on your YouTube channel I'll be driving up from Hampton VA. But not to see Adam. My Grandparents live near King Of Prussia. It just so happened that I would be visiting them that week. Sometimes you Score. I'm going to drive up to the city early and spend the day In the Museum District and meet you guys around 5ish. See y'all there.
