Saw one of these sitting on the counter at Guitar Center. Snazzy-looking and comfy in the hand, but I had no harps to try it out with. Anyone tried one?

It's another incarnation of the Superlux D112/Peavey Cherry Bomb, a Chinese made Green Bullet clone. I have some other Superlux mics and they are actually pretty good value, though I can't claim to have any first hand knowledge of this one. There are some Youtube clips of people using these if you look around. A bit treblier than a Shure bullet I believe. I've asked Santa for one because I need a cheap backup mic for gigs and all my others are just too nice or delicate to take the abuse (and you can never have too many mics right?)

I didn't see a price on the Red Howler, but if it's more than $70 then the Superlux is a better deal... but not as red.

Yep, that is nearly identical to my Peavey Cherry Bomb mic.

This Peavey has been modded by Gregg Heumann. He swaped out the crappy element for a Shure CM, and installed a better volume pot. What I like about the mic is the large size, which provides a bigger resonant cavity for the element. This mic gets a deep tone.

I cannot recommend the original Peavey H-5C mic or the clone you saw in Guitar Center. Digital Reference is Guitar Center's in-house budget brand of Audio Technica gear.

But... If you do buy it, or happen to find one on eBay, send it to Gregg Huemann for retrofitting and upgrades. It's one of the better sounding CM mics I've heard.

But, it claims "More Mojo!"

Right now I'm mojo-low, as I go, could use summoe.

As they are (and I hate to badmouth products in public) they're not very good. (I'm being polite here.)

First, the peavey version had a mini-XLR connector - guaranteed to fail quickly and nearly impossible to work on. I modded the one in the photo and installed a screw-on connector. Second, they have a sort of rubberized coating that I'm sure will look very dirty very soon. But most importantly they just don't have any tone - modern, cheap element.

Apparently the maker "OEM's" the mic through several different companies who want to offer a microphone under their own name but don't want to invest the money to develop one of their own and/or study the market.

Yet another proof of the old adage "if it sounds too good to be true it probably is."

Yeah, Greg, I figured as much, after seeing the connection at the shell, and knowing good and well it'd be an element I'd hate. It just looked all shiny and red and new, so it was worth inquiring about. I do like the ergonomic shell, but I don't 99$ like it, especially knowing it's an instant project. Besides, I'm saving my coin for an Ultimate 545!
