I have a 1950s Montgomery Ward 10-watt amp (Model 8439) which I believe is pretty much the same circuit as the Silvertone 1432 amp. The amp is great (compresses early and breaks up lots) but the speaker (a 1950s Utah Alnico) has a buzz and is a bit muddy in tone. Any advice on a replacement? I want a speaker that has a lot of crunch, fat bottom and smooth response -- if that makes any sense. Looking for that horn-like 1950s Chicago tone. Anyone familiar with this amp (I think the Airline 9003 is identical) have any recommendations on a replacement speaker? Weber 12A125 or the Jensen P12Q? Jensen P12R? Others?
Thx, Don

Any 12 inch alnico from the late 50's/ early 60's will probably suffice. They're out there. Lot's of them have been robbed from organ cabinets. Shit an old organ will bring anywhere from 5 to 25 bucks at auction.

Old organ speakers ROCK for harp. I have a couple of them (8" sized though), and they just are super fantastic sounding...

Take a look at Weber's offerings. Although Ted regretfully passed away last summer his family and staff are carrying on the tradition. I only have experience with their guitar amp speakers but they make some modification for harp speakers on request.

Don, I own a 62 ampeg Reverb-o-rocket with a 12" ceramic Jensen. I thought the speaker had seen it's better days too. Muddy, almost farty on the bottom,
lackluster highs, breakup from about 4 o'clock on.
On the advice of a friend,I set the amp on a 6" high road case to get it off the floor. It totally cured the problem... Tightened up the bottom end and brought new upper dynamics to my ears. (That smooth breakup is just an Reverb-o-rocket thing, I"m told) That was about 7 years ago and that original speaker is still going strong. Now, I wont argue that a new one ~may~ sound better but, the old barker has satisfied me till now.

If I were to replace it I imagine I would get the Weber C12Q. Good reviews, fair price.

Most of the Silvertone cabs had blue lable Jensen Alnicos, those vintages 12's show up on ebay regularly. I replaceda tired old sppeaker in my Masco combowith one and it sounds terrific. You can't go wrong with a Wber either.
