Hi All: I was surfing google for harp forums and found this one this morning. I am a one man band that features harp, guitar, drums, vocals, and keyboard. I also am the creator of Spontobeat. I spontaneously make up all words and music as I go along. I spent a lot of years playing full time and got to spend many a night with some great blues players. Anyway, I figured I would sign up and check out the site. Walter

Hi Adam: I met you back at tramps one night. that was a great club.

Ah Walter your finally here: Granville Ohio, Blues capital of, well Granville Ohio. What a great place and venue for the Blues!! I met Walter there Sept. 08, when James Cotton head lined and Teeny Tucker opened.
How much fun was that. The blues Jam after was spectacular. Walter gave me a Sponto beat cd that night and one at this years Gahanna blues fest. I think at Gahanna he made over 28 cd in less than a month.

If you have'nt check out Walter,Your missin out. he's made over 250,000 cds and not a one the same. Played with some of the biggest Stars of yesterday and today.
Walter I still need lessons. I try to feel it from the Heart but I'm so paper trained, other things get in the way. Glad your here. Love you Man. Walter is also the best well dressed bluesman out there. Merry Christmas K.C.

thanks for the welcome guys and the flattering intro KC69! After living my life in big cities around the world, granville is a oasis. I am no longer interested in "making it", and love the easy pace, safety, and affordability of granville. With Denison Univ here, there are many ecclectic folks. Kind of a mini austin of sorts and we can walk everywhere. Plus it is a dog lover town!

I am not sure how much I will have in the way of input here. I know nothing of theory, custom harps, current mic/amp set ups. I blow and sing through my vocal mic. I like a natural sounding harp. I have dabbled years ago with the amped set up, but it never has held my interest.

On top of this, I make everything up as I go along. It is a very addictive thing. I need to do this to stay sane and like any addict, will do whatever it takes to keep getting that high. For me, that has meant passing up many opportunities for possible fame because they involved rehearsed and repeated stuff. I learned how to play guitar/keys/drums, and went to a 1 man band format so I can have my music ready to go 24/7. I never look at books or videos. I just pick up an instrument and noodle. I find simple things that amuse me via this process. I am fine playing the same little thing for a lifetime. I find there is an endless journey for each note. Our culture tends to speed through things and miss the depth of the experience. I see this in most players today. They know more in their pinky finger than I know in my whole body, but they lack depth and groove. Kind of a summation of our culture.........

The rack and playing all the instruments at once limits alot of what I can do on the harp and guitar, but the freedom of dealing with band hassles-keeping a good band intact, cooridinating everyone for gigs, and mainly being able to change chords and times as it hits me, makes the stuff I loose worth it.

Because I am the only one doing Spontobeat, means there is no established slot for it. This has pretty much disconnected me from the music business and blues world. There is some sadness with this, but the high I get surpasses anything I felt doing a traditional approach to music. I figure the world has to come to me. If not, I am content playing in my studio and live gigs when asked to play. The studio has been a great thing. It is a dream I have had for over 40 years. When playing full time, I had no money for such a thing. Plus it was all tape back then and one had to be multi millionare to set up a good studio/label. Now with the computer, I have my own studio, label, pressing factory, and distribution network. The drive to make good sounding recording is as strong as the drive to do spontobeat. I am self taught in recording as well. It may take me a long time to reach my goal, but that is good. the journey is the high.

I guess what I am saying is this- follow your heart. We only have one life and time is something no one can buy back. I feel blessed to have discovered spontobeat and have the drive/need to pursue it. Life is short- live big! I write spontaneous too, so please excuse typos. Walter

that video is a year old. In the world of spontobeat, that is ancient :-) Here is a fairly recent solo harp song- just me and hands on the harp. I have gotten into more simple playing over the years- holding, twisting notes, over just blowing all kinds of notes.

gene: The bushman forum is one I like. John the owner has supported what I do and his forum attracts some souls I can relate to. I post my songs for free. I have been accused on other forums of endless self promotion and even been kicked off a few for this. I don't understand that because I give it all away and can't help it that I record about a cd worth of stuff a day. I can't help it that songs just keep coming out. I post only a few of each session because it takes too long to load them to the net. Anyway, the bushman forum encourages me to keep posting my songs as they come out. You should post some there. Walter

Walter,
I won't be posting at Bushman. The vast majority of posters over there are well seasoned players. I wouldn't fit in there. I barely fit in here. This forum has a fairly good mix of players of all levels. I don't take my learning as seriously as I should. (My main problem is shyness.)

You said, "...I am not sure how much I will have in the way of input here. I know nothing of theory, custom harps, current mic/amp set ups...." All sorts of things besides that technical stuff are discussed here. You're post, above, is already providing us with food for thought. You could probably start a couple of different threads about what you brought up in that post.

You can post all the songs you want, here. As for selling stuff, I think we have a special thread for that. Unfortunately, threads can't be made to stay on the top, so it would have to be searched for. I don't know what the name of that thread is. If I find it (if it exists), I come back and edit this post with a link to it.

(edit):
OK, y'all...somebody...What's the deal on selling our own stuff here? I dug 20 pages deep and couldn't find a thread that sounds like it might be the place.

hi gene: Thanks for the note! IMO the bushman forum has mostly unseasoned players who have lots of gusto. I don't think I will be selling anything here. I hate selling stuff. I bring cds to my gigs and give most of them away. I have no real bond with any of my songs once they are done. I am totally connected to them as I play them and then it is over. Kind of like the way a dog chases a squirel and loves the game till it breaks its neck. Then it just walks away.......

I shot a video for the bushman world harp contest with the tennis shoes song. It is a solo harp song. The harp contest at bushman is on till the end of the year. I won it last year with a real funky video and blowing harp on a rack. All levels of guys submitt entries. You should give it a shot. One thing I never had was fear about getting up and playing. I guess that is gift. Here is a link to the video. Walter

hi gene: Thanks but it really is no big deal. When one is driven, things like this become a great adventure. I basically got sick of being dependent on others to make and record music. Like I said earlier, I am an addict to spontobeat. I was never able to find others as dedicated to it as me and ended up frustrated and feeling sorry for myself alot of the time. So, I just put that energy to learning the instruments I needed to hear. The meditation process is what opens up the mind and soul to allowing all the limbs and voice to act independently of each other. This journey has led me to studying martial arts, dealing with my emotional baggage, and allowing myself to daydream while I play. The hardest thing has been playing lead guitar while doing the drums on my feet. I am beginning to crack that one and a new plataeu is arriving. Most 1 man bands I have heard smash and do alot of distortion on the guitar and harp. I like it cleaner. Kind of a cross between jimmy reed, lightning hopkins, and the doors sparce stuff. Walter
