I recently got a bunch of harps of of ebay. All in one bunch. There were 16 Hohner Marine Bands, a Special 20, a Hering 1923 that has no cover plate screws, and 2 Marine Band cases with some parts, old reed plates & screws.
I just started going through them one at a time and it looks like they're going to be all bad. The first couple had fractured reeds and it looks like they will all have some problem or other.
Now the seller said in the auction that he did'nt play harmonica so if I believe him I can choose to ask him to take them back or go through a dispute with Paypal as the arbitrator.
The thing is I'm starting to work on my own harps and there's a pile of good parts here. I have at least 16 pairs of good cover plates. Probably a dozen good MB combs. 20 good MB plastic harp cases. And a pile of good reed plates, some that I may be able to use the top from one with the bottom from another and make up a few good harps.
How much are cover plates worth? $3.00 to $4.00 a pair maybe. Combs? Cases? I paid about 100.00 and it seems that the value of the parts come pretty close to this.
Most of you guys know what this is worth more than I do. Would you keep it or try to get your money back?
Thanks
Ryan

When you buy used harps (or anything else for that matter) off ebay it's a gamble and you get what you get. If the seller has diliberately lied about something you may be able to make a claim and get your money back, but it doesn't sound like that's the case here. Ussually auctions like that are sold "as is" and you get what you get. So unfortunately you're probably going to have to make the best of what you got, but honestly it doesn't sound like that bad of a deal, all those extra parts can be really useful.

Well, if you can restore 5-6 harps with reed replacements, and concidering your time for the labor, seems as though you will have gotten your moneys worth. Seems to be a fair trade for the money.

When someone HAS a bunch of harps, or anything else, it is a good bet they know something about them. In my experience when I see "I have no way of knowing if they're any good" - or they have a mic or amp and they say "I have no way to test this" - I assume the chances are VERY likely they're knowingly selling junk and trying to hide it. If the price is STILL right then I might be interested. This goes for mics, amps, harps....

chicken salad or chicken shit...
"If life hands you lemons, make lemonade."

I think you got off cheap. Surely I'm not the only one on this list with 75 to 100 busted harps that make up my parts inventory? Like most every one of us I paid 20-25 bucks a piece for them... you do the math. That that stock you now own cost WAY less than that.

I bought a hohner case with 7 or 8 harps in it (Blues, Spl. 20's, and MB's) half were bad, but I got them for less than the hard plastic case cost new, so i fell i'm ahead of the game.
