an old friend died and his wife has given me his super chromatica harmonica.
he used to smoke heavily and the harp just reaks of it.
the harp is quite old andi'd like to bring it back to health
so,do any of you know how to get rid of the smell and the taste and what to seal the wooden comb with?

Jason Ricci has a good video on cleaning (diatonic) harps that might help.

(Mongoose free method)

I think the wood sealing guys use that butcher block sealing stuff. Hopefully that would seal the smell behind a protective layer.

Try washing it with a very strong moutwash like listerine.

All of the above are good. I use Sea Clean and ultrasonic, like Nick. Sterisol spray is excellent, too.

If all else fails, a couple of drops of Olbas Oil (eucalyptus and mint) on a piece of cloth in a Tupperware box next to the harp will give a better smell than the baccy.

It's my understanding that you will want to take it apart and let the wood air out for a stretch (perhaps two weeks) before sealing - much of the smell should dissipate on its own, and then seal in a less foul smelling wood...
