Nice tattoo Jon, I like it.

I got a couple ideas for my next tattoo, one includes something with a harmonica. Who knows, I haven't felt motivated to go but maybe someday. Mine have been sporadic & one of them I got when I went with a friend who never got one before.

I read an article about body modification. One of the stranger mods was people getting magnets implanted in the tip of their finger. They'd feel a small tug when they moved it into magnetic fields. They could even tell if a wire was hot or not. Not all that different from a pick-up.

I also so a video of someone with an app for their iPhone that let it play like a harmonica.

And they have those implantable RFID chips.

Now all we need is to get someone to put all those things together and we can have wireless-electronic-finger harmonicas!

I would kick the tattoists ass for not being able to tat straight lines or uniformally sized holes... but thats just the perfectionist in me....great idea for the tat tho, *****

SWEEEEEEEEEEEET! That looks AWESOME. And, yes it WAS me who came up with that design (but I think someone else may have initially suggested it. Kyser maybe? You'll have to check that old "mbh apparel" thread.)

I'm still saving my pennies, but I'm going to get basically that design on forearm. I've been playing around with various incarnations of it, and I have yet to completely make up my mind (ie, fill in the other holes black, or leave them hollow like yours? Use red for the other holes? Include a schematic line for the coverplates? etc.)

Good on ya!

Kyzer- I remember seeing a special on Greek architecture. I think it was the Parthenon, because they new the structure was so large they took that into account on the perspective lines on the front. I guess really large objects up close can look crooked, so to make them look straight you have to make them crooked.

(Nothing to do with the tattoo, but you said something about straight lines and it made me think of it.)

Jon's right Sandy88, the human finger is not perfectly round or perfectly flat. Any movement in the finger will make it look slightly uneven but that does not mean the Tattooist has not put the transfer on straight or is a sub standard Tattooist.

The Tattoo looks bang on to me. I have a Mustache tattooed on the inside of my finger(for comedy effect) and as soon as i bend my finger slightly it wlll bend out of shape a bit but the tattoo has still been done well.

Im sure Jon knows a thing or two about Tattoo's and im sure he trusts his tattooist.

P.S. im digging this design alot. would you (Jon) or Issac mind if i got that design somewhere on me, i think it sums the harp up perfectly.(if not thats ok with me)

The red line is perfectly straight, the holes don't follow that, it's not perspective or distortion from flesh, although I am aware that that can affect how tattoos look.

Taking my just-turned-16 year old to get what he wants for surviving the first 16 years with me-a tattoo-tomorrow night. A small one to represent the first drum corps he marched with, it what was their final season. Will resist the urge to get my own...still not sure what I want, other than I will draw it myself. In '94 I did a still life pencil drawing of a pile of my harps and one of my bullet mics sitting atop a wooden stool...it hangs in my mom's house 2000+ miles away in Marin County, California, so I guess I'll do a small re-creation for tat's sake. Maybe Greg Heumann can swing by and scan it in to email it to me...(hint)

The last time I went with my Wife to get her last tat (which was about that size on her inner wrist), I think it came to about $60 ($80 with the tip). Places usually have a minimum price that covers the cost of drawing the transfer, setting up the ink, and the autoclaving of the instruments, etc. That price is good for a tat up to some size (ie. in terms of time it will take the artist), and then some sort of price/hour is added to that base cost for anything larger or more complex. The cost is also usually a bit higher for tats with colors than for just black or blue. As I understand it, the black/blue inks can be set deeper into the skin than certain other colors can be, and if done as an outline, they help to contain the other colors, and keep them from dispersing out.
Except for her first one, my wife has always gone to places with a good reputation, which will cost more. It's worth it. Otherwise, (as she found out with that first one) you end up having to go to another place eventually anyway to have the low quality tat touched up and corrected.

Is the depth of the black and blue inks the reason I see some people get the outlines done on one day, the the coloring or filling-in another? My sis-in-law has a LOT of ink, all very ornate and beautifully done stuff that sort of follows a theme. I've noticed her sometimes sporting an outline for a while(that looks cool alone), then it will be filled.

Yeah, I think on larger designs, you generally have to spread it out over a couple of days for various reasons, probably not least the pain threshold thing. Also, I think that browner skinned folks (like me) will have more need for outline work than lighter-skinned folks (like my wife). I've seen some really impressive/beautiful non-outlined color work, but it's all on really fair-skinned people (and usually women for some reason). Otherwise, I think the design gets really undefined on darker skins.

Edit: For an example of how non-outlined color work can spread out, take a look at the blood splots on Jon's forearm tat in comparison to the outlined Pi symbol. (I'm making an assumption those are blood splots, jon. Please excuse me if i'm wrong). Jon, when you first got them, were they similar to the newly touched up versions?

I have a tattoo on my shoulder in black and blue that says "blues power" with the blues over the power.
Unfortunatly over time it has filled in and the word power is barely legible.
Needs some fixin' up.
I don't know what it is about tattoos that makes them kind of addicting.
I have a real urge to have needle put to skin again, but I don't have the money at the moment...

tattoos are very addicting. esp right after you get one done. i love the whole ritual of the artist setting every thing up. the sound of the gun. the stinging pain an the releaf when he lifts the needle for the next line. an i like the smell of a&d ointment too.

What is great is that everyone has their own opinion on stuff. What bugs me is that every now and then some people try to pass their opinions as fact.

I think it's darn cool, meaningful, a conversation starter, & quite original (can't remember ever seeing someone with a tattoo like that & trust me I've seen very many).

I also really like how the blood splots were redone. They have more depth and texture.

I don't quite remember which ones toddlgreene but certain colors do hurt more then others as well as certain parts of your body. I seem to recall that yellow hurts a lot. Or was is red? I dunno. Another thing, don't forget that is your getting a huge piece done the artist doing it will want to split up the work on different dates for his/her own sanity as well.

None of my tatts are harmonica related or I'd consider posting, lol.
