I keep scaning the web in search of new finds, i.e. harp players from around the world. That's how I discovered how lively a blues scene there is in Brazil, and that's how I stumbled upon the names of Jefferson Gonsalves, Flavio Guimaraes and the like. Guimaraes' last CD is a tribute to Little Walter, haven't listen to it yet, but some cuts are available on Youtube. One of his CD which I own is called Navegaita and is well worth a listening : blues with a deliberate brazilian flavor. I like that, and like to expand my horizon. Do you have any listening suggestion about blues harp players from foreign lands ? (I mean non-US and non-Europe here)

You piqued my interest. Hit Google and immediately found this. Haven't listened to it yet but it sounds interesting. Don't know if there will be any harp featured but thought you might be interested.

There's quite a blues harmonica scene in France. Greg Szlap, JJ Milteau, Christelle, but a lot of others as well.
Is anybody here from France and can you give us an update on the French blues scene, especially harmonica?

@Stickman, yes, african blues is a world in itself. There is so much good music coming from West Africa. I think that the term itself (African Blues) orginated with Ry Cooder recording with Ali Farka Touré (Talking Timbuktu is a must have CD). If you want to listen to a raw hypnotic electric blues-rock, check Tinariwen, a Touareg group. But I still have to hear harp in there.
@Kudzunner, I must confess : I am technically french. But as I have been living in the West Indies for more than a decade now, I would be useless in updating information on the french blues scene. I was also looking for something more "exotic" than my own old country's music...

Hi i am French but has been living in Sweden for 6 years so i might not be up to date .Well jj milteau is the king he has just released a new album called " soul conversation".If you guys have a Spotify account go and listen his previous album "live hot n blues" this one of the best album he made. Greg Zlap is also active and have clinics in france an poland. Then you have david herzhaft,Paul Lassey and i'am sure many more .There is a harmonica festival every year "Harmonica sur cher" and an international blues festival in Cognac every year (BB king ,Luther Alisson played there and many more) this is a famous and rich festival for the blues community. Well that all i have in my pocket .
But please listnen to jj milteau 's stuff he is so underestimate, and the youtube vids doesn't do him justice,i guarantee that most of us would learn a lot by trying playing his music.

Sorry, cm16600, I was just trying a joke for the locals (moi aussi je suis français). I don't completely share your enthusiasm about JJM but I must admit that he is a very fine player, and well worth checking for all these bloody foreigners who don't know him yet...

Scandinavia has some great blues harmonica players. The best for my money is probably Helge Tallqvist.

I like Helge Tallqvist a lot too. Other good players in Finland include Pepe Ahlqvist and Tomi Leino. Tomi is actually multi-instrumentalist blues player who has played f.ex. drums and guitar with Steve Guyger.

Pepe is a great player. In the UK, Paul Lamb is a monster player, who I got to meet in 2003 at Sculler's here in Boston on Jerry Portnoy's 60th birthday gig. There's another guy from Brazil to think about, Ave Ravenello. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte
