I have meditated on your question, although it was the first time I had meditated in a long time (actually, mostly I did progressive muscle relaxation, and breathing exercises, which is the same thing except that when you say it that way people know you are crazy (or pregnant, I guess, for breathing exercises).
It's useful for relaxing and can help focus you when you are bouncing off the walls. It's one of those things though where it takes practice to get it working right and when you stop doing it you get out of practice quickly, or at least it was for me.
Funny thing, when you are anxious, one of the first things that happens to a lot of us is you start breathing irregularly and shallowly. Fortunately, breathing in and out deeply to a rhythm, like say, playing harmonica, is really good for breaking bad breathing patterns too. I actually started harmonica, for among other reasons, because it was recommended for asthma, but I've found it's also a quick way to calm down, much like meditation. Exercise works well too.
Medication also works, if you are really crazy. :)

Over time, it can loosen the hold that the thinking/ruminating mind has on you. You don't react to your thoughts like they are the most important thing happening in the moment; that helps you stay in the "larger moment" so to speak -- which can benefit musical performance (this being a music forum).
