It's time to start making a list of folks here who are planning on attending the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, January 20-23, 2010. That's only a couple of weeks from now.

I know that Zack is an official entrant. When and where are you competing, Zack?

I also know that JayG is performing in Betsie Brown's showcase--at the Rum Boogie, I believe. Please give us details on that, Jay. Time/day.

Will anybody else from the forum be coming on down? I haven't yet booked my hotel room.

I am NOT planning on hosting a get-together in my room, as I did last year, but if it turned out that a number of y'all were coming to the IBC, I might figure out a meetup spot.

Hey Adam, they haven't given us any times and I guess we won't be informed until we arrive in Memphis. I will let all of you guys know, though!

Hey Zackie-Gonna travel with the HarpAttack alone, or are you lugging the HG? I wish I could make it up there, but our month's extra cash is being spent travelling to Dallas for drum corps camp.

I will be performing in the solo/ duo category- Tom Walbank and Arthur Migliazza representing Southern Arizona. It would be great to meet up somehow, I believe we get our alloted venues the day we get there. Tom

Nope, my band got beat out in the IBC here in Denver. But watch for the band that won, Boa & the Constrictors. No harp, but good band.

My non-band got beat out too, not that we deserved to win. I hope the judging in other areas wasn't as corrupt as it was here in New Orleans...

Todd, I thought the judging here was very fair. I knew three of the judges on our five-judge panel, and one of those was a harp-player buddy. I thought we might have an inside shot. But, no... the winner deserved it. Great set. We were close but no cigar.

It was laughable here, Rick. If the same 'judge' team gets used again next year, there will be little to no involvement. I'm glad to hear there's legitamacy and integrity elsewhere.

I have learned it is a crap shoot with the IBC competitions. 2 years ago I won the columbus competition on what I considered a fair performance with a pretty strong bill of performers. This year, I felt my performance was tops and the field not as sharp, and I finished third. I take these things as a little gig in front of a good listening audience. If it goes any further, good, and if not, that is fine. Walter

ps: regardless of the panel, each judge will have a preference to style, lineup, etc. That is human nature. I was suprised to see how many seasoned performers were in memphis (I am talking over 60 years old) that went nowhere. There was one in my venue, an older black man that played harp. He was classic 50-60's sound and didn't win. I had him pegged as the winner simply because he had the years and sound. Who won? A young kid that IMO was good, but no way could touch the depth of the older gentleman. One thing I saw in the winners in memphis was youth seemed to get preference over experience. Go figure......

That's the right attitude walter, and I had to remind myself and several others of it. Sure, it was a free gig(here), but we were surrounded by our peers and a very appreciative audience on both nights, despite the judging.
Harp-wise, our own Smoky Greenwell(who replaced Lee Oskar in War when the band had their nasty split) and guitarist Mark Penton will be going to Memphis in the duo category.

thanks Todd. Getting older has its perks! That sounds like a tough duo to beat! Walter

Honestly, and I'm friends with both Mark and Smoky-there was a duo on the same night I played called Jack Yoder and Lil G(steel guitar and harp, respectively)that did Delta-style originals and they were AWESOME, better than the other guys even, and that's a compliment. Another negative nod towards the judge's table, I'm afraid, but I wish Smoky and Mark good luck.

That's what I am talking about Todd- opinions and art and music are totally subjective things. I would take SBWII over little walter anyday........

Todd, no way I'm taking a HarpGear on a plane! That'd be big money and a BIG risk! I'm VERY confident and safe using the HarpAttack methinks! :)

I thought so, Zack. I was waiting to hear your confidence in the HA. That speaks volumes for the HarpAttack. Drop Randy a line and let him know you'll be competing thru his pedal(and send a vid link when it's all said and done)-he'll be proud!

I will definitly be there to cheer on Jay and Zack.

I also did not make it into the competition this year. My local blues society did not even hold a competiton for the solo/duo catagory. Instead they automatically selected two guitarists; one of which (Eric Hughes) playes harmonica.
