My intention in writing this open letter is merely to give people food for thought. I have no desire for this thread to be added to and would therefore appreciate it if you would just read it's content, draw your own conclusions and then move to the next thread.

Thank you for your consideration.

MBH Open letter

The recent threads started by "Chopper" have really brought out some inflamatory comments from all and sundry (myself included). This got me to thinking last night about what a bunch of self absorbed, arrogant, egotistical people we all really are.

This forum should be about the harmonica, the techniques to play it, mend it, improve it, customise it. The amplification of it, effects, mics, speakers, etc.

Instead a significant portion of the time a lot of us (myself included) spend bickering over stupid banal statements that we perceive (rightly or wrongly) someone to have made about us individuals or someone else on the forum.

I'm not surprised that people leave this forum or simply choose never to post and just lurk, when we have this level of behaviour on a fairly regular basis. Yet often those same people could have valuable insights / opinions into the subjects pertaining to the harmonica.

I'm sure that on some level it must sadden Adam to see his MBH forum used in such a disgusting and thoughtless manner by so many of us. Often I see so many comments by people that are derisory and some border on just being plain offensive, vulgar or threatening.

Now I know some of you will say that this kind of thing takes place on other forums and that we need to "toughen up", but that is no excuse for that kind of behaviour. If it was then violence and abuse on every level in life would be acceptable. Just because it happens somewhere else, doesn't mean it should happen here.

Isn't it time we just all grew up and realised that this forum is about the harmonica and not some place to air our views over things that really do belong on other forums.

I for one am going to strive to achieve this and I implore the rest of you to try and do the same.

Yours Sincerely

I have participated on many forums- some moderated (like this one) and other totally un-moderated (like USENET alt. groups). Any time you have an open forum where anyone can participate by signing up or not you will have problems- some small and some not so much so. Sometimes it is just someone having a bad day (BTDT and been that). Other times it is the sociopaths in our society just looking for a way to piss people off, and all the extremes that span between those.

In moderated forums I have seen people permanently kick-banned, and I have seen one un-moderated forum run into the ground by one or two low-lifes. What to do? Create a set of standards that allow all to have a fair voice, keep discussions on topic, be tolerant, and ban those who show that they can't play nice with others.

None of this is new. Someone in my community (as older person) was saying that they can't understand what has happened to their country, how can people do this and that, and the rest of that rhetoric. I told them that things aren't changing- read the bible- those sorts of people have been around about as long as people have been around.

I can't ever be a moderator- I have a low tolerance for the sociopaths, the anti-social types who get their perverted kicks on creating tension and furor wherever they go (to the point that I confronted one, face-to-face, and in no uncertain terms, using language I NEVER use in that way, told him to get the F out of my life.). So much thanks to the mods of this group for the difficult job they do.

And in the meantime, let's just all play nice, and non illigitamus carborundum. ;-)
