Last night I went to a friend's house to pick up my Shure 520D and CAD HM50 that he rewired properly for me. I tested them thru a 14w(I believe)Bogen run thru a new Epiphone Extension cab with the Eminence 12". Both sound pretty good(although I still want to get a 1 to 5-meg pot for the HM50 for more bottom end). This head and speaker combo sounded excellent-loads of bottom end without being muddy. So, he began trotting out several mics for me to do a side-by-side comparison. An EV606, EV633, SM57, modded dynamic Shaker(w/ a transformer to make it hotter) and an EV RE10. First, the 606. Wow, great fit in the hand! Fairly hot, and a bit more rounded sound than I got from my CM 520D. Next up was his favorite(as of last night, anyway), the 633. Heavy and sort of awkward with the stand mount attached to it, but nice bottom end and a good amount of gain. I would get tired of lugging it around, though. Next, the venerable 57. A good mic for versatility, with a fairly clean full-spectrumsound when played open, then it will get fairly dirty with a tight cup, and good bottom end. Then came the Shaker, which is identical to mine, with a transformer to make it hotter. It's very one-dimensional. I've sued mine forever due to it's durability and comfort, more than anything. And then, the RE10. Now, i bought one off Ebay with high hopes about a year ago, and I think mine really did fall down a mountain, true to it's looks. I think mine has a damaged baffle or something. I plugged in his RE10, cupped it good, and began going at it...WOW. Much dirtier than the 57, more bottom than any of them and still the full-spectrum sound of a vocal mic. I played for a good half-hour on this mic, marvelling at the awesome tone I was getting! So,fast-forward to today, he calls me in mock anger saying I ruined him-he had acquired that RE10 some time ago from Gary Onofrio, and pretty much stuck it in a drawer, but gave it a second chance after my raving and wailing on it, and it's his fave, too. I think I'll be getting another RE10!

I've had one for a few years and have liked it fairly well. Always thought the tone was nice and balanced for harp but it seemed to tame. This week, I bought a impedence transformer and through this thing the RE10 is a smokin' hot blues machine! The same day I got the transformer, I returned a JT30 with MC151 element to its rightful owner and certainly the RE10 will help ease the pain of parting with a great JT30

Wow, if you were playing that RE10 without the transformer, and then added one, it had to be an eye-opener! I also love how light the mic is, and ease of cupping. ---------- ~Todd L. Greene crescentcityharmonicaclub@gmail.com
