I dont know about that Hobo, Adam Gussow went to see him and posted some very informative stuff about his individual technique.
I first heard him about 15 years ago and it hit me like a bolt out of the blue. So fast and fluid and just different. I love that style and have incorporated that into my own playing, not copying but learning from it.
I think he has a great voice too don't you?

Love the tone: heavy distortion with some kind of chorus effect. The flute fills are tasty, too.
And the strippers....

Wait, there was music? Never crossed my mind to turn up the volume.

I am a Popper fan, and this is a cool sound for him.

In high school heard Blues Traveler on the Radio and liked them. I bought their album, listened to it and didn't like them. Started playing harmonica and........Time to pull that old cd out. I remember it was green with a cat on it. If I find it, I'll throw it in my truck and see what 20 years and a new perspective does.

Stickman, that album, Four, put them on the map, but there were some other great releases with lots of substance. The self-titled first release contained But Anyway, which you might recognize from the end of the movie Kingpin. Their second album, Travelers and Thieves, is one of my faves. Save His Soul and Straight on Til Morning are all worth checking out. A lot less harp on the newer ones, but still some good material. I discovered their first album not long after I started playing, and it totally changed my idea of what the harp can sound like, and how I played.

one thing Popper does not seem to get enough credit for is his catchy hooks and heads that he puts in his songs. I think that is a main reason that he is popular at the level he is... he acknowledges as much in "hook"

That whole album is FANTASTIC! Exceptional use of positions and a rotating speaker effect. I love that CD!

I recorded with a new Orleans-based band called Deadeye Dick several years ago(remember Dumb and Dumber the movie? Their song New Age Girl was the title track)in a now-defunct studio called American Sector. Two weeks before, Blues Traveler rolled thru there and laid down tracks, and Popper left an SP20, which the engineer wanted me to play, and I said 'eew. Why don't i just cut out the middleman and just kiss the guy?'...anyway, the engineer said Popper rented a Hammond Leslie cabinet to hook up thru his rack effects and MesaBoogie stack and the sound in there was just amazing...I use a Dunlop RotoVibe for leslie effect, and it's passable. Harper(Peter Harper)recorded thru a leslie cab as well on his last album. Good stuff-see him on tour if you haven't already(helluva nice guy, too). I think Popper is to thank for all the 'unorthodox' effects being added to the harp for different textures.

Here is some Popper triva for you all. His father was my fathers boss for many years in NYC. Popper senior was loud, self promoting, and a motor mouth. My father is very quiet, a man of few words, and I never have seen him self promote. So, here are 2 sons, both harp players and both, musically speaking, have followed in their fathers footsteps. Popper is loud, a million notes a minute, and Tore plays at acoustic levels and a man of few notes on the harp. Don't underestimate the power of parenting :-)
