Brady of HarmonicaSpace has recently created a Google Map of all the members of his website. He did it automatically so apparently the depiction is not totally accurate. However it gives you a good impression of how the worldwide harmonica community is spread out on our little planet.

It was kinda surprising for me where the harpists concentrated in Europe. To my surprise there is really not much going on in germany, france, spain, italy. The places where people rock the harp on continental Europe are Beligium/Netherlands, Poland and the northern Balkan.

I can't think of any reason for that...

Here's the link to the Harmonica Space Users Map.

Language. "

That would explain Holland and flamish Belgium. But Poland and northern Balkan?

Otherwise Language is actually a pretty good explanation.

I have map envy. :(

I know language is probably a big issue, but it can't be all of that. The U.S. seems to be about population density. I thought for a second that maybe it was internet access, but lots of parts of Asia have great internet access. I wonder if it's different harp culture. Maybe diatonic, chromatic and tremolo harp players don't mix?

Language is the issue.
There are loads of harp players in France and Spain. There is a blues harp college in Paris run by JJ Milteau; one of the best retail shops for Harmonica is in Pigalle in Paris 18
Every make, every key and I mean every make, all top quality firebreath's etc and they sell loads.
In terms of participation on internet forums such as this, the issue is language.

And there are french-speaking harmonica forums, I guess french people go there easier.

Yes, there are very good forums in french, spanish and portuguese, i.e. places that are notoriously bad at speaking english (allow me that kind o generalization ; I'm french). Reverse is true for Northern Europe, where people tend to speak very good english.
The language factor is evidently there for Asia, but, as Nacoran said, it's mainly a difference of harp culture. Never been to Japan, but China is definitely tremolo land, and harmonica an instrument for chinese folk.

Don't be too hard on yourself, nacoran.... :) As a consolation, I'm pretty sure he got the idea from this forum. ;)

saregapadanisa, what are the french forums? I'm also french. I had a look some time ago but didn't see any.

How did he add everyone automatically? I'm not sure I'd want my pin added automatically, but still, it's interesting that he found a way.
