I have the feeling this is one of those stupid questions beginners ask, but compared to y'all I'm wetter than a fresh-caught carp behind the ears. I've got a Special 20 whose action has tightened way, way up on me in the past few weeks. I've been trying to regap her, and just can't get 'em set right. My go-to harp guru told me the rule of thumb is gap as wide as the thickness of the reed. Here's the Stupid Beginner Question: with draws 1-2, does this refer to the weight on the end, or the reed proper?
Also, any other gapping advice you guys could offer would be mucho appreciated. Much obliged!

The bulk of the reed, NOT the thickness with the weight.

To be honest, I have mine all set as tight as I can before they stick. It's a time consuming process of trial and error.
I am not claiming this to be optimal though of course, just how I have been doing it recently!

Hey scrybe, there is no better instruction on gapping that has been graciously given to us by Joe Spiers via a nice series of YouTube vids. Search for his YouTube name (ChoppaJoe, i think) and/or for "harmonica gapping" on YT, and watch as he completely regaps a harp from hole 10 thru hole 1 before your very eyes. Everything I know to be true about gapping I learned from those vids. (or actually I first had to unlearn a bunch of stuff, and then re-learn how to do it right).
Cheers,
