This is aimed at Jonsparrow and anyone else who suffers from canker sores. This is public service announcement. (I started it as a new thread because the thread in which Jon mentioned he had them was more about developing new technique and I didn't want to hijack that.)
If you have or get canker sores - which are NOT the same as "cold sores" - you have my sympathy. They are intensely painful and a strategically located one can make playing harp practically impossible.
Get thee hence, at all speed, to the nearest Safeway or Pharmacy and get yourself some Lysine. This is an over the counter amino acid in tablet form - you'll find it in the vitamin section. I used to suffer from canker sores (here's another tip - eating walnuts is practically guaranteed to bring them on.)
If you already have the sore or sores, Lysine will help them heal faster and reduce or stop any spreading. But one you learn how MAGICAL this stuff is, you'll just learn to take it anytime you think you're at risk, like when you feel that first tingle, or when you bite your lip, or when you just forgot about the walnut thing.
I won't say there are no risks or side effects because I'm not a pharmacology expert, but I certainly don't notice any. This a natural compound already present in many foods we eat and I believe it is a very safe, easy solution. Since I started using it (a few years ago) I have had ZERO canker sores. I even keep a bottle in the glove box. The faster you take some after feeling a possible sore coming up, the better. I speak from first hand experience. If you google it you'll find out why it works and that I'm not making it up.

I bit my cheek REALLY badly once. My doctor suggested pineapple, or more specifically, pineapple juice, to help heal any sore in the mouth or that general area. I keep a can handy. It really seems to work. I haven't done a double-blind study or anything, but I swear by it!

Yeah, I tried all kinds of numbing products, anbesol gel, etc - they sting like hell when you put them on, give limited relief, and seem to irritate the canker sore and make it worse. Lysine is proven. ---------- /Greg

Lysine ointment? Haven't heard of that. Can you tell me the specific brand and product name? Might really help speed the cure. I have only used the pills - and they certainly work well. ---------- /Greg

Cold sores, fever blisters, canker sores, they are all a curse from the devil him self. My dad my sister and my self get these what ever you care to call them. My sister does the lysine with fair results. I have had good luck with "Abrevia" over the counter ointment if I catch it when the tingle 1st starts. My Dad started using it also. Before he just used Blistex and suffered thru it. Iv'e had to play with them and a bloody harp an't no fun,I had to keep a tissue handy. I seem to get them when under a lot of stress or when I get dehydrated. I 1st thought to much sun was the culpret but I dissproved that this summer. To the afflicted, I feel your pain. I wish a miricle drug would be invented that would send them all back to hell where they came from. "Bleedin lip's Mike"

"And without it, the dinosaurs slip into a coma and die. The lysine contingency from jurassic park..so it's good stuff. "
Well if you saw Jurassic Park 2 or 3 you'd see how well that worked. The dinosaurs that were herbavores survived by eating indigenous plants high in lysine (soy if I remember correctly). And the carnivores survived by eating the herbavores (they were high in lysine from eating all the plants). In the words of Dr. Ian Malcolm/Jeff Goldblum "Nature finds a way."

Ryan- Jurassic Park 2 and 3 had more to do with the fact that the movie execs wanted a sequel than any logical plot point.
Strick- Actually, pineapple feels pretty good on it. It's not real citrus-y so it doesn't hurt at all. Of course, you have to remember to peel it first.

I started getting a couple of those mouth ulcers under my tounge right about the time jon first posted on this topic. Got some 1,000mg L-Lysine tablets. Those sores never got bad. They are there, but they haven't caused the usual severe pain.
Thanks for the tip, that stuff works!

I'm a lifelong sufferer, myself. Took Lysine a long time ago, but it didn't seem to help me that much so I gave up on it. Lately, I've been taking Omeprizole (Prilosec) to combat reflux, which when it gets too bad gives me big sores in the back of my throat and tonsils. OK, getting to be TMI, there, sorry.
The other thing that I've found helpful lately is to do a mouth rinse with equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water, at least twice a day. If I do this right when the sore(s) start(s), it keeps them from getting too big.
For instant pain relief, I like Kanka (made by Blistex). It seems to coat the sore and protect it, at least long enough to get a meal down, and a bit longer.

Yeah, I've had 500 and 1000 mg - I've taken 2 1000's a day with no worries. Leon and Jon - if you ever even SUSPECT you're getting another sore - take one immediately. Then take another 8 hours later. If the symptoms go away, (and for me they do) you're done. ---------- /Greg

We had this discussion about a year ago, didn't we Greg? I suffer from MAJOR canker sores. I used to get them so bad I couldn't talk or eat, I mean a mouth full at a time.
Two things have helped me out. First, I use a tooth paste from Rembrandt that is specific for canker sore sufferers. This has brought my 'attacks' way down as well as the severity of them.
When I do feel a canker sore coming on I use a prescription rinse called chlorohexidrine gluconate. I get the script from an oral surgeon. This stuff is MAGIC for me. As soon as I feel that twinge I rinse, twice a day. Sometimes it prevents them from coming on at all and if they do they are short lived (a day) and minor.
Good luck, Brother Jon.
