I'm sure that technique and practice are the most important things when bending, but what other variables come into play? Are some brands of harps easier to bend than others? Different keys etc. Any and all insight and advice appreciated. Thanks.

Hi easyed, this same question came up at the weekend and was covered quite extensively. This link will take you to the thread. Damn, GH beat me again. ----------

Easyed, I bought a book and cd called Mel Bay's first lessons. Dave Barrett is the reason i was able to bend within a week. Seeing the dvd and reading the explanation in the book really made it clear what was happening and how to make it happen. This book is what got me onto the web and is the reason i found Adam Gussow's youtube series of lessons, among others. I highly recommend it. It is a very grass roots instructional book and video and made all the difference for me after 40 years of failure on this instrument.

Easyed, if I'm reading your question right your not asking "how to bend" which has been covered in the earlier thread, but rather a question about brands and keys of harmonica's.
I think that when learning, a higher key such as a C or D harp is the easiest to begin with. I found an A harp almost impossible to start with. With brands I suggest you stay away from the really cheap ones, such as Hohner Bluesband as they also can be very difficult to bend. I started with a Hohner Special 20 in C as this was recommended by JP Allen, whose video’s I was using to learn with at the time. And while now I definitely prefer the sound of the Marine Bands, I still think Special 20's or something like a cheaper Suzuki Bluesmaster is easer to learn bending on. (This is all just personal opinion of course).

I agree with Blocker, try learning to hit your first bend on a C or D harp. And start with hole 4.
Good luck, I promise you will get it after a short while, and then it will be like natural to you!
