I like to write blues lyrics. Anybody else here do that? At the jam I go to I've not heard any new tunes (except one time).

Also, what kind of patterns do you like? Of course there is the classic

A
A
B

Pattern. But I've also heard this kind

............rhyme a
............rhyme a
..rhyme b......rhyme b

Also,

....rhyme a...rhyme a
....rhyme b....rhyme b
....rhyme c....rhyme c

What other patterns do you like to use when writing blues?
Also many choices in terms of verse, chorus, etc...

yes, i do, but I don't think in patterns. More like a line comes to me, then it fits into the song, and the pattern evolves. hard to explain, it just sort of pops out. often time the line is inspired by a harp riff and matches the mood. i also steal like crazy from other songs.

some examples

Bottle of wine, fruit of the vine
Me and my baby, walkin’ that line
Strolling at midnight, drinkin’ real slow
Drinking by moonlight, lettin’ it flow
Feelin’ real good, feelin’ real fine
We’ve got each other, and a bottle of wine

this one ends up with the man with the bottle and without the woman.

and a cheating song

You came into my room
It was late so late that one night
Your black hair was jet black
Yet it shone with a light
How can this be so wrong, but still feel so damn right?

My old bones are achin'
and the sun is out today

well, my old bones are achin'
and the sun is out today

well i'm gonna learn to hurt and play
cause this pain ain't goin' away....

Well I've got to keep on movin'
just to hide my shaky hands.

I've got to keep on movin'
just to hide my shaky hands

Well my teenage 'lectrocution,
gonna change my old age plans.

Verse 1 and 2 of "Electrocution Blues"

My song about various symptoms brought on by my electrocution when I was 19 years old.

That's the only blues song I ever wrote. It has a guitar and harp intro, 2 standard 12 bar AAB verses followed by a 16 bar chorus IV-IV-I-I, then IV-IV-V-V back to the second 8 bars..IV-IV-I-I, IV-V-I-I..if that makes any sense. I am not printing the lyrics for the chorus at this time because they are a very direct Christian message and I don't want to start an unintentional thread hijack about belief systems. The double 8 bar phrasing in the chorus does add an interesting twist to the slow blues sound of it and keeps it fresh so the song seems to really go by fast even with full guitar and harp solos after the first chorus.

Basically it's 8 bars that repeat the phrase "electrocution blues" during the IV chord bars with the rest of a phrase in the I bars and different responses in the next 4 bars...twice. Basically for 4 bar call and 4 bar response...two phrases of this to develop the idea. The words "Electrocution blues" appear only in the chorus. I know that is now clear as mud..lol.

After that there's a guitar solo over the verse progression, 3rd verse, 12 bar harp solo over the verse progression, and final chorus...whew, that's harder to explain than it is to play and sing...lol. Not sure i really explained it in a way that makes any sense..lol. Like I said, it's the only blues song I ever tried to write. It's slow and the guitar plays some 9th chords that really sound cool. He wrote those in himself. It works. It's about a 5 minute song That tells a story from beginning to end.

Cinderella Momma
© Nathan Smith 2008

Got to find me a sugar momma
Someone to pay the bills
Got to find me a sweet somethin' somethin'
Yeah deal with my dollar ills

Oh Yeah (keyboard solo)

I don't care if she's ugly
Makes no mind at all
Don't need no Cinderella
Don't want no big fancy ball.

Just want a sugar momma
Someone to buy me clothes
To buy me all of life's little things
But you know the way things go

But I don't got me a sugar momma
Got a girl with a heart of gold
We got us some hard times
Yeah, All her jewelrys done sold

Yeah (guitar solo)

I know I got to leave her
Before we wind up on the street
But she's got that glass slipper
And you know I'll never leave

Gonna buy back all her jewelry
Buy her a big diamond ring
But I got me no skills,
Man, yeah all I do is sing

Yeah (harmonica solo)

I'm no sugar daddy, yeah
But she don't never mind
She just smiles and whispers softly
Oh sugar daddy, baby you so fine

Sweet sugar daddy, she whispers
You know it will work itself out all fine.

Fun Trouble C. 2009 JSRank

When she walks down the street, she makes a blind man see
But he don't know she'll make his life a misery...
She'll have him feel like the happiest man in town,
Then turn around and tell his friends she's puttin' him down

She's fun....Fun trouble,
Yeah she's fa-un...Fun trouble,
She's fun, fun, fun, Fun trouble!

She got long blonde hair and those electic eyes...
And the way she moves when she shakes those thighs,
She got everyone lookin' when she's on the floor,
Then walk out with another 'fore you know she's hit the door.

She's fun....Fun trouble,
Yeah, she's fa-un, Fun trouble,
She's fun, fun, fun, Fun trouble!

< solos >

Well she looks like an angel, but's a devil in disguise
So listen to me and don't be surprised
If you look, be careful what you touch,
Have some fun, but don't...
Have too much!

She's fun....Fun trouble
Yeah she's fa-un, Fun trouble
She's fun, fun, fun, Fun trouble!

Works as a shuffle, but I perform it as a rhumba. I sing the verses and have join-ins on the chorus.

There is a Sonny Boy II clip around here somewhere on the current threads--"Nine Below Zero--" The rhyme scheme is

A
A
Z

Sounds really cool to me--but then, Sonny was about the coolest performer ever--he didn't need to worry about rhyming. . .
